This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

Before Ruth gathers a single stalk, she seeks the favor that can open the field to her.

You can be at the beginning of provision while still asking for access: Ruth moves toward a field where she may gather what remains. Favor in another’s eyes opens a way for her, and Naomi’s “Go, my daughter” releases her to move.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that provision begins only when you can claim the whole field; Ruth’s next step is to gather what remains under another’s favor.

חֵן

chen

GROWS FROM

חנן

ḥanan

to show favor; to be gracious

English “grace” can sound abstract, but chen means favor, kind regard. Ruth hopes to be received favorably by the person whose eyes fall on her, so being seen with favor becomes part of the path to provision.

ALSO GROWS

ḥānan: to show favor; be gracious

חָנַן

The verb names the action behind the favor Ruth hopes to find.

ḥannun: gracious; favor-giving

חַנּוּן

This form describes the quality that makes favor possible.

teḥinnah: supplication; entreaty

תְּחִנָּה

A request for help grows from the same root as favor, echoing Ruth’s “Let me now go.”

לָקַט

laqat

GROWS FROM

לקט

laqat

to gather or pick up

“glean” in this verse is laqat. Gleaning gathers stalks one by one from among the sheaves instead of claiming the harvest as a whole. The word gives provision the scale of what can be picked up, after favor makes room to gather.

ALSO GROWS

leqet: gleanings; what is left to gather

לֶקֶט

This noun names the remnants Ruth seeks in the field.

liqqet: to gather; pick up

לִקֵּט

This related form keeps the action concrete: provision comes through collecting what is left within reach.

Favor opens a way forward, while provision is kept within reach of those who need to gather it.

And the LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.
Exodus 33:17 · KJVMoses finds favor in God’s sight, and that favor opens the way for his request.
When thou cuttest down thine harvest in thy field, and hast forgot a sheaf in the field, thou shalt not go again to fetch it: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow: that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hands.
Deuteronomy 24:19 · KJVThe forgotten sheaf remains available for the stranger, fatherless, and widow to gather.
And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
Luke 1:30 · KJVMary’s favor with God comes before the path that opens before her.
But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.
Genesis 6:8 · KJV

Noah’s verse uses the same Hebrew word ⁨חֵן⁩ (chen, favor) and the same image of finding it in someone’s eyes. Ruth’s request carries that same structure: her route into provision begins with a favorable gaze, before the harvest enters her hand.
