What Does Zechariah 1:16 Mean in the King James?
Therefore thus saith the LORD; I am returned to Jerusalem with mercies: my house shall be built in it, saith the LORD of hosts, and a line shall be stretched forth upon Jerusalem.
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The LORD’s return takes measurable form: compassion rebuilds the house and extends a line across Jerusalem for renewed dwelling.
THE MEANING
The LORD returns to Jerusalem with compassion, and the rebuilding of the house begins within that return. A line extends over the city, making restoration concrete and measured; Jerusalem carries shalom (שָׁלוֹם, shalom: wholeness), so the promise speaks now as a return to room for life.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that compassion leaves broken places untouched: here compassion accompanies a house rebuilt and the city measured for restoration.
THE ROOT
שַׁבְתִּי
shavti
GROWS FROM
שׁוב
shuv
to turn back, return
“returned” in this verse is shavti. This root holds return and restoration in the same movement: English separates the one who returns from what is restored, while Hebrew joins them. The LORD’s return is also the movement that brings Jerusalem back toward wholeness.
ALSO GROWS
teshuvah: return, turning back
תְּשׁוּבָה
The return in the verse carries the sense of a renewed turning toward Jerusalem.
yeshovev: restores, brings back
יְשׁוֹבֵב
The same root appears as “restoreth” in Psalm 23:3, linking return with the restoration of a living soul.
רַחֲמִים
rachamim
GROWS FROM
רחם
racham
womb; compassion
“mercies” in this verse is rachamim. Compassion here carries the image of womb-like care: it protects and sustains life. It accompanies the return as practical care for a place being rebuilt.
ALSO GROWS
rechem: womb
רֶחֶם
This branch reveals the life-protecting depth beneath the compassion accompanying the rebuilding.
rachum: compassionate
רַחוּם
The related quality names the tender care present in the LORD’s return.
תִּבָּנֶה
tibaneh
GROWS FROM
בנה
banah
to build, establish
“built” in this verse is tibaneh. The root of building also branches into words for children and building structures, joining a restored house with a restored household. The house is not only a structure; its rebuilding makes room for life to gather again.
ALSO GROWS
banim: sons, children
בָּנִים
This branch links building with the continuation of a household.
binyan: building, structure
בִּנְיָן
This branch keeps the physical force of the verse’s promise: a dwelling takes shape again.
THE PATTERN
Wholeness takes visible form when a dwelling is rebuilt and room is made for people.
The LORD doth build up Jerusalem: he gathereth together the outcasts of Israel. And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.THE THREAD
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. The Hebrew behind “restoreth” shares the root שׁוב (shuv: to turn back, return) with “I am returned” here. In Zechariah that return rebuilds the city; in the psalm it restores the living soul and redirects its path.
