King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The horns make power visible as a point that scatters even Yerushalayim, the wholeness-named city, so fragmentation is done to the people, not their nature.
THE MEANING
This verse names the force behind communal fragmentation as pointed power: horns scatter Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem. Yerushalayim carries shalom (wholeness) with the dual ending, the two wholenesses, yet the wholeness-named city is caught in the scattering too. The wound remains visible: dispersion is what is done to the people, not the fullness they are named to carry.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the lie that a scattered people are inherently broken or that dispersion is their nature; the verse names a force doing the scattering.
THE ROOT
הַקְּרָנוֹת
ha-qerānôt
GROWS FROM
קרן
q-r-n
Horn; a projecting or raised point.
“horns” in this verse is ha-qerānôt. The consonants q-r-n join qeren (horn) to qāran (to emit rays), connecting a horn and radiance as forms of outward projection. Here the horn is power with a point, driving the named peoples apart.
ALSO GROWS
qeren: Horn; also an image of strength.
קֶרֶן
Its projecting shape makes the verse’s image of force concrete.
qāran: To shine or emit rays, as the skin of Moses’ face does in Exodus 34:29.
קָרַן
The related word extends the image from a horn’s point to something radiating outward.
זֵרוּ
zērû
GROWS FROM
זרה
z-r-h
To scatter or winnow.
The root also names winnowing: the people are not merely far apart but dispersed as if flung outward. English “scattered” hides this image of separation imposed by force.
ALSO GROWS
zārah: To scatter or winnow.
זָרָה
This verb carries both the dispersal in the verse and the image of sifting apart.
mizreh: A winnowing fork or shovel.
מִזְרֶה
The tool spreads and separates what it throws, giving the root’s scattering a physical shape.
יְרוּשָׁלַיִם
Yerushalayim
GROWS FROM
שלם
sh-l-m
Whole, complete; shalom is wholeness.
“Jerusalem” in this verse is Yerushalayim. Yerushalayim carries shalom (wholeness) with the dual ending, the two wholenesses. The verse names this wholeness-carrying city among those scattered, sharpening the rupture between the name and what is done to it.
ALSO GROWS
shalom: Wholeness, completeness.
שָׁלוֹם
It is the wholeness carried in Yerushalayim’s name.
shalem: Whole, complete.
שָׁלֵם
It makes the name’s wholeness concrete as a condition of being complete.
THE PATTERN
Scattering breaks a people into separation, and gathering names the restoration of their shared life.
So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat; and hast scattered us among the heathen. And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.THE THREAD
Then said I, What come these to do? And he spake, saying, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, so that no man did lift up his head: but these are come to fray them, to cast out the horns of the Gentiles, which lifted up their horn over the land of Judah to scatter it.The same qeren (קֶרֶן, horn) returns: the scattered people cannot lift their heads, while the horns themselves are cast down. The image shows both what pointed power does to a people and that the force doing it can itself be brought low.
