What Does Zechariah 1:21 Mean in the King James?

Then said I, What come these to do? And he spake, saying, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, so that no man did lift up his head: but these are come to fray them, to cast out the horns of the Gentiles, which lifted up their horn over the land of Judah to scatter it.

This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The horns that keep Judah’s head down are not permanent: the vision turns their raised power into the thing that trembles.

The force that scatters Judah and keeps its head lowered is itself confronted: the horns raised over the land are made to tremble and driven out. Oppressive power is exposed as something that can be overturned.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that a force raised over you is untouchable, or that a bowed head must stay bowed, is undone: the horns themselves can be made to tremble and cast down.

לְהַחֲרִיד

leharid

GROWS FROM

חרד

ḥ-r-d

Tremble, quake, or be afraid; in this verb form, cause to tremble.

The KJV’s “fray” can sound like wearing something down, but the Hebrew says these powers are made to tremble. The verse turns the terror around: those who kept Judah from lifting its head now face fear themselves.

ALSO GROWS

charad: To quake or feel fear.

חָרַד

This is the root’s bodily image: the ones who seemed secure in their power are no longer steady.

charadah: A state of fear or shaking.

חֲרָדָה

The related noun makes clear that the verse describes fear falling on the oppressors, not merely their removal.

קְרָנוֹת

qeranot

GROWS FROM

קרן

q-r-n

Horn; by extension, a projecting point or ray.

The horn is the image of power lifted over others, and the verse shows its direction changing: the horns first rise over Judah, then are cast out. A related form, ⁨קָרַן⁩ (qāran, radiate or shine), describes Moses’ shining face, so the same consonants can also picture something projecting outward as visible radiance.

ALSO GROWS

qeren: A horn; also an image of strength or power.

קֶרֶן

This is the word behind the nations’ raised power and the force that dominates the land.

qāran: To send out rays or shine.

קָרַן

This related form shows another way the image projects outward; in Exodus 34:29 it describes Moses’ shining face.

זָרוּ

zaru

GROWS FROM

זרה

z-r-h

Scatter or winnow.

“scattered” in this verse is zaru. The Hebrew word for scattering also belongs to the language of winnowing, where material is driven apart. That sharpens the verse’s picture of Judah being dispersed, while the turn against the horns shows that the dispersing force is not beyond reach.

ALSO GROWS

zarah: To scatter, disperse, or winnow.

זָרָה

The same verb-root describes both the scattering of Judah and the forceful separation implied by winnowing.

mizreh: A tool used to toss grain so the wind separates it.

מִזְרֶה

This related word makes the root’s image concrete: scattering is an active driving apart, not a neutral change of place.

Power pictured as a raised horn can be cut down, while deliverance is pictured as a horn raised.

All the horns of the wicked also will I cut off; but the horns of the righteous shall be exalted.
Psalm 75:10 · KJVThe same image of horns names power that can be cut down or lifted up.
And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;
Luke 1:69 · KJVHere a raised horn is the image of deliverance arriving for the people.
The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall he thunder upon them: the LORD shall judge the ends of the earth; and he shall give strength unto his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed.
1 Samuel 2:10 · KJV

The phrase “the horn of his anointed” uses the same Hebrew word, ⁨קֶרֶן⁩ (qeren), as Zechariah’s horns. Together the verses show the image changing direction: the horns raised over Judah are cast out, while the horn of the anointed is exalted.
