This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

Here, opening is the moment the consuming fire gains access to what seemed beyond its reach.

Lebanon’s doors stand open, and the fire reaches the cedars behind them. The image holds the violence plainly: what is lofty and celebrated can still become fuel once the boundary gives way.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse dissolves the belief that height, beauty, or grandeur can make a thing untouchable.

פְּתַח

pətaḥ

GROWS FROM

פתח

Open, loosen, or unfasten.

The command is an unfastening. This root also names an entrance and a key, so “open” is about access: the fire reaches the cedars as the doors are released.

ALSO GROWS

petaḥ: Opening, entrance, doorway.

פֶּתַח

The doorway is the opening itself: the point where what is outside can reach what is within.

miftēaḥ: Key.

מַפְתֵּחַ

The key is named from the same root because it opens; Isaiah uses it beside the verb “open” in its image of access and authority.

וְתֹאכַל

wətoʾkhal

GROWS FROM

אכל

Eat or consume.

“Devour” in this verse is wətoʾkhal. The verb uses the ordinary word for eating, making the fire an eater, not only a force that chars. The cedars become what the flame consumes.

ALSO GROWS

ʾakhal: Eat, consume.

אָכַל

This is the root verb in the verse: fire is pictured as eating the cedars.

maʾakhal: Food; something eaten.

מַאֲכָל

The same root names what is eaten, sharpening the image of the cedars as fuel consumed by fire.

לְבָנוֹן

Levanon

GROWS FROM

לבן

Be white; whiteness.

The place-name carries the sense of whiteness, traditionally associated with Lebanon’s snow. The verse sets that bright, elevated landscape beside fire reaching its cedars.

ALSO GROWS

lavan: White.

לָבָן

This is the root’s basic color sense, carried in the name Lebanon.

levanah: Moon; the white one.

לְבָנָה

This form carries the same whiteness into another name for something bright and visible.

The fire image strips away claims of invulnerability: what it reaches is consumed, from thorn and forest to Lebanon’s cedars.

And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and put your trust in my shadow: and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.
Judges 9:15 · KJVA bramble’s threat makes fire the means by which even Lebanon’s cedars can be devoured.
And say to the forest of the south, Hear the word of the LORD; Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will kindle a fire in thee, and it shall devour every green tree in thee, and every dry tree: the flaming flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burned therein.
Ezekiel 20:47 · KJVFire reaches every green and dry tree, bringing the entire forest under the same consuming force.
For our God is a consuming fire.
Hebrews 12:29 · KJVThe image of consuming fire extends from forests and cedars to a direct description of God.
And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.
Isaiah 22:22 · KJV

The word for “open” here shares its root with the “key” and “open” in Isaiah. That connection makes Zechariah’s doors the point where access is granted, and here, what enters is fire.
