What Does Zechariah 3:2 Mean in the King James?
And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?

THE KEY
The LORD answers accusation by treating the brand’s char as evidence of rescue, not evidence that the fire owns it.
THE MEANING
When accusation makes your damage sound like proof that you are abandoned, this verse speaks a different verdict: the LORD chooses and claims the one the fire has marked. A brand is not untouched wood; it bears the fire’s trace and yet is pulled from it. The damage is real, but it is not the final authority over you.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie this undoes is: “If the fire has marked me, I have been rejected and the accusation is right.” The verse holds the marked one as both chosen and rescued.
THE ROOT
מֻצָּל
mutsal
GROWS FROM
נצל
Snatch away, rescue, deliver.
“plucked” in this verse is mutsal. The Hebrew describes the brand as the recipient of a rescue: it is taken clear of danger. The fire is real, but the word names the act that removes the brand from its claim.
ALSO GROWS
yatsil: He delivers.
יַצִּיל
Psalm 34:19 uses this form for the LORD’s deliverance, showing that the same root names the act of taking someone out of danger.
nitsal: Be rescued; escape.
נִצַּל
This form places the subject as the recipient of rescue; the brand’s survival is something done to it, not something it achieves by being unmarked.
הַבֹּחֵר
ha-bocher
GROWS FROM
בחר
Choose, select.
“chosen” in this verse is ha-bocher. The Hebrew calls the LORD “the chooser of Jerusalem,” keeping the choosing bound to who the LORD is in this verse. Beside the rescued brand, it lets choosing and visible damage stand together.
ALSO GROWS
bachir: Chosen one; elect.
בָּחִיר
This branch names the one selected, clarifying that Jerusalem’s chosen status remains central to the LORD’s answer.
mivchar: Choice; selected portion.
מִבְחָר
The same root can name what is selected, linking the LORD’s act of choosing with Jerusalem’s place in the verse.
הַשָּׂטָן
ha-satan
GROWS FROM
שׂטן
Oppose; act as an adversary.
“Satan” in this verse is ha-satan. With the Hebrew article, הַשָּׂטָן means “the Adversary”: the word names an opposing role. The rebuke answers that opposition directly, while the verse grounds its answer in the LORD’s choosing and rescue.
ALSO GROWS
le-sitno: To oppose him; to accuse him.
לְשִׂטְנוֹ
The form appears in Zechariah 3:1, naming what the Adversary is doing; the next verse answers that accusation with a rebuke.
le-satan: As an adversary.
לְשָׂטָן
Numbers 22:22 uses the word for the LORD’s messenger standing against Balaam, showing how the term can describe an opposing role.
THE PATTERN
Rescue can pull the marked one out of real danger without pretending the fire never touched it.
I have overthrown some of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and ye were as a firebrand plucked out of the burning: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.THE THREAD
I have overthrown some of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and ye were as a firebrand plucked out of the burning: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.Amos uses the same Hebrew words, אוּד (ʾûd, “brand”) and מֻצָּל (mutsal, “rescued”), making this a verbal echo as well as a shared image. Its line says that being pulled from fire does not settle what follows; that sharpens Zechariah’s scene, where the LORD’s rebuke interrupts accusation while the brand’s life after rescue remains open.
