This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

Jerusalem is not only where the nations arrive; its name makes their shared seeking a movement toward wholeness.

Many peoples and strong nations turn toward the LORD together, seeking him and entreating him before his face. You are addressed within this living picture: the LORD is sought by many peoples, and distinct nations converge before his presence. Jerusalem, carrying the sense of wholeness, names the destination of that convergence.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie that the LORD’s presence belongs to one people alone dissolves here: many peoples and mighty nations seek the same LORD.

לְבַקֵּשׁ

levaqqesh

GROWS FROM

בקש

To seek, search for, or request.

“seek” in this verse is levaqqesh. This is active seeking, a pursuit of what is desired. The same root can name a request, so the nations’ movement toward the LORD is also an appeal directed toward him.

ALSO GROWS

mevaqqesh: One who seeks.

מְבַקֵּשׁ

The nations in this verse are seekers in motion, not merely onlookers.

baqqashah: A request or petition.

בַּקָּשָׁה

The root joins seeking with asking: the nations come seeking the LORD and entreating him.

וּלְחַלּוֹת

uleḥallot

GROWS FROM

חלה

To be weak or ill; in this verb form, to entreat or implore.

“pray” in this verse is uleḥallot. The verse’s word for prayer carries the sense of entreaty: an appeal made before the LORD’s face. Its root also names sickness and weakness, holding need and supplication within one word family.

ALSO GROWS

ḥoleh: A sick or ill person.

חֹלֶה

This branch shows the root’s language of human need beneath its sense of entreaty.

maḥalah: Illness or sickness.

מַחֲלָה

The shared root gives the nations’ prayer the character of an appeal from need.

יְרוּשָׁלַיִם

Yerushalayim

GROWS FROM

שלם

Whole, complete, or sound; the root carried in shalom, wholeness.

The name Yerushalayim carries the sound of shalom, wholeness, and the verse gathers many peoples there in a shared seeking. In the movement from constriction toward spaciousness, Jerusalem names the destination of wholeness.

ALSO GROWS

shalom: Wholeness.

שָׁלוֹם

This branch gives the city’s name its sense of the wholeness toward which the nations gather.

shalem: Whole, complete, intact.

שָׁלֵם

The root’s sense of completeness frames Jerusalem as a place of convergence.

The LORD’s presence draws peoples beyond their own boundaries into shared approach.

And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
Isaiah 2:3 · KJVMany people move together toward the LORD, seeking his teaching and walking in his ways.
All nations whom thou hast made shall come and worship before thee, O Lord; and shall glorify thy name.
Psalm 86:9 · KJVThe nations the LORD made come before him together, echoing Zechariah’s gathering of peoples seeking his presence.
Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest.
Revelation 15:4 · KJVThe vision again brings all nations before the LORD, extending the pattern across the whole scriptural story.
Seek the LORD, and his strength: seek his face evermore.
Psalm 105:4 · KJV

“Seek” in both verses comes from the Hebrew root ⁨בקש⁩ (baqash). Psalm 105:4 makes the object of that seeking explicit: the LORD’s face, the presence before which Zechariah’s nations come.
