And them that are turned back from the LORD; and those that have not sought the LORD, nor enquired for him.

THE KEY
In this verse, distance from the LORD is measured by what stops: the searching and the asking.
THE MEANING
This verse recognizes a distance that can settle in without a dramatic declaration: the reader no longer seeks the LORD or asks him. The turning is present in the relationship’s withdrawn attention and address.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that turning away must look like open rejection; it can also appear as the quiet cessation of seeking and asking.
THE ROOT
בִּקְשׁוּ
biqshu
GROWS FROM
בקש
to seek, search for, pursue
“sought” in this verse is biqshu. The root carries the sense of actively searching or pursuing. A related branch, בַּקָּשָׁה, means a request or petition, so the verse’s absence of seeking sits beside the absence of asking: both pursuit and appeal have fallen silent.
ALSO GROWS
mevaqqesh: one who seeks; a seeker
מְבַקֵּשׁ
This form shares the root בקש and makes seeking an active orientation, not just a passing thought.
baqqashah: request, petition
בַּקָּשָׁה
This branch shows how the root’s search can also take the form of an appeal.
שְׁאָלוּהוּ
she’aluhu
GROWS FROM
שאל
to ask, request, inquire
“enquired” in this verse is she’aluhu. The word means asking him, giving the verse’s withdrawal a direct relational dimension. Beside בקש, it describes both ceasing to search for the LORD and ceasing to address him.
ALSO GROWS
sha’al: to ask or request
שָׁאַל
This is the verb behind the verse’s “enquired,” showing that the action is asking the LORD.
she’elah: a question or request
שְׁאֵלָה
This noun shares the root שאל and connects inquiry with making a request.
THE PATTERN
A person’s orientation toward the LORD is expressed through active seeking and asking.
Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:THE THREAD
And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee. The Hebrew word for “seek” here shares the root בקש with Zephaniah’s “sought.” Zephaniah shows what withdrawal looks like; this verse shows seeking within a relation the LORD does not forsake.
