This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The Hebrew word for “sword” shares its root with desolation, carrying the ruin inside the weapon.

The verse names the Cushites, called Ethiopians here, as people struck by a sentence of lethal judgment. “Also” extends that sentence, and “my sword” names its source without softening its violence.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that the sentence stops with those already named: “also” extends the threat to the Cushites.

חַרְבִּי

ḥarbî

GROWS FROM

חרב

ḥ-r-b

To dry up or become desolate.

The verse’s ⁨חַרְבִּי⁩ (ḥarbî, “my sword”) comes from a root whose word family also names dryness and ruin. The weapon and the desolation it brings share a seed, so judgment is pictured as ruin made sharp.

ALSO GROWS

ḥārav: To become dry or desolate.

חָרַב

The verb names the ruin that the sword’s judgment brings.

ḥorbāh: Ruins or desolation.

חָרְבָּה

This noun makes explicit the desolation held within the sword’s root.

ḥōreb: Drought or dryness.

חֹרֶב

This branch keeps the root’s image of what has been dried up and left barren.

When scripture names the LORD’s sword, it presents judgment as an act directed against the peoples it names.

If I whet my glittering sword, and mine hand take hold on judgment; I will render vengeance to mine enemies, and will reward them that hate me.
Deuteronomy 32:41 · KJVThe speaker claims the sword and explicitly connects it with judgment against enemies.
For my sword shall be bathed in heaven: behold, it shall come down upon Idumea, and upon the people of my curse, to judgment.
Isaiah 34:5 · KJVThe LORD’s sword descends upon a named people as judgment.
And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
Revelation 19:15 · KJVThe sharp sword is directed against the nations in an image of divine judgment.
The spoilers are come upon all high places through the wilderness: for the sword of the LORD shall devour from the one end of the land even to the other end of the land: no flesh shall have peace.
Jeremiah 12:12 · KJV

The same Hebrew word, ⁨חֶרֶב⁩ (ḥerev, “sword”), appears here and is explicitly called the LORD’s. Jeremiah widens the image to a devouring judgment that reaches across the land.
