This verse in the King James

King James wording
Thy prophets have seen vain and foolish things for thee: and they have not discovered thine iniquity, to turn away thy captivity; but have seen for thee false burdens and causes of banishment.

False visions keep captivity in place when they leave the crookedness undiscovered.

This verse speaks wherever trusted voices offer empty visions while leaving the crookedness beneath captivity undiscovered. Their false burdens deepen the exile instead of opening a way back.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A convincing vision is not proof that a voice is guiding you out of captivity.

גָּלוּ

gālû

GROWS FROM

גלה

Uncover, reveal, expose; in another use, go into exile.

The word translated “discovered” is ⁨גָּלוּ⁩, from ⁨גלה⁩ (galah, uncover or reveal): the prophets fail to bring the crookedness into view. This root also carries the sense of going into exile, placing uncovering and exile within the same verbal field. While the truth stays hidden, the return has not begun.

ALSO GROWS

gālāh: Uncover, reveal; also go into exile.

גָּלָה

This form shows the root’s range: what is uncovered comes into view, while exile carries the sense of being removed from one’s place.

niglāh: Be revealed, become visible.

נִגְלָה

This form describes something coming into view, the very disclosure the prophets fail to provide in this verse.

What remains concealed keeps captivity in place; bringing it into the open makes return possible.

I make my falling short known to you, and my crookedness I do not cover. I say, I will speak my rebellion into the open before the LORD, and you release the crookedness of my falling short. Selah.
Psalm 32:5 · SDVThe speaker brings what was hidden into the open, and release follows.
Whoever covers his rebellions shall not prosper, but whoever speaks them into the open and lets them go shall be shown compassion.
Proverbs 28:13 · SDVConcealment keeps a person stuck, while bringing the truth into the open makes a different path possible.
If we speak our shortcomings into the open, he is steady and aligned, to release our shortcomings, and to cleanse us from all crookedness.
1 John 1:9 · SDVWhat is spoken into the open meets release and cleansing.
Hatred is covered with deceit; his harm is uncovered at the appointed time in the assembly.
Proverbs 26:26 · SDV

The word translated “shall be shewed” is ⁨תִּגָּלֶה⁩ (tiggāleh, will be revealed), from ⁨גלה⁩ (galah, uncover or reveal), the same root as “discovered” here. Lamentations grieves that this uncovering fails; Proverbs says what is covered can still come into view.
