This verse in the King James

King James wording
For he doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men.

The Hebrew locates affliction outside God’s heart: he can cause grief, yet grief is not what he desires.

The grief is real, and even where God is named as its cause, it is not described as the desire held in his heart. Compassion remains beside the grief. Your pain is not proof that God delights in your suffering.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

My pain proves that God takes pleasure in hurting me.

וַיַּגֶּה

wayyaggēh

GROWS FROM

יגה

y-g-h

to cause grief or bring sorrow

“grieve” in this verse is wayyaggēh. The same root appears in the previous verse for “cause grief,” where compassion follows immediately. Here, the phrase rendered “willingly” is literally “from his heart,” distinguishing the grief he brings from what is deepest in him. The sorrow remains real; the root does not make it harmless.

ALSO GROWS

hōgāh: he caused grief

הוֹגָה

This form of the same root appears in Lamentations 3:32, linking the grief named there directly to this verse.

tûgāh: grief, sorrow

תּוּגָה

This noun from the root gives grief a name, keeping the emotional cost visible rather than abstract.

Even when God is named as the cause of suffering, the text keeps compassion and life at the center of his desire.

Do I take any delight in the death of the wicked? says the Lord, the LORD. Is it not in his turning from his ways that he lives?
Ezekiel 18:23 · SDVThe verse places life and turning at the center of what the LORD desires, not death.
How shall I give you up, Ephraim? How shall I hand you over, Israel? How shall I set you as Admah? How shall I set you as Zeboim? My heart is turned over within me, and my compassions burn together.
Hosea 11:8 · SDVThe heart recoils at giving people up to destruction, revealing the anguish within judgment.
Look, we count them flourishing who remain under it. You have heard of the endurance of Job, and you have seen the end of the LORD, for the LORD is very tender in his inward parts, and moved to groan.
James 5:11 · SDVThe Lord’s compassion and tender mercy remain present with those who endure suffering.
For though he causes grief, he still has compassion according to the abundance of his faithful love.
Lamentations 3:32 · SDV

This verse uses the same Hebrew root as “grieve” in the next verse, here rendered “cause grief.” Together they hold both truths in view: he causes grief, and he has compassion according to the multitude of his mercies.
