This verse in the King James

King James wording
Who is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not?

The Hebrew asks whether becoming itself can stand apart from the LORD’s command.

This verse meets the reader wherever a claim is treated as though speaking it makes it inevitable. It asks whether anything truly comes to be by a voice acting on its own, and places what happens beneath the LORD’s command.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that a declaration becomes reality simply because someone says it; what comes to be is not presented as independent of the LORD’s command.

וַתֶּהִי

vattehi

GROWS FROM

היה

to be, become, come into being

“cometh to pass” in this verse is vattehi. What English calls an event “coming to pass” is the Hebrew verb for being or becoming. The verse links what comes to be with the LORD’s command.

ALSO GROWS

hayah: to be, become

הָיָה

This is the root verb behind the verse’s “cometh to pass.”

ehyeh: I will be

אֶהְיֶה

This form from the same root shows that the language of being and becoming also appears in a first-person promise.

צִוָּה

tsivvah

GROWS FROM

צוה

to command, charge

“commandeth” in this verse is tsivvah. The root carries the sense of an issued command or charge. Its branch ⁨מִצְוָה⁩, “commandment,” ties the verse’s command to the same word family as a binding instruction.

ALSO GROWS

mitzvah: commandment

מִצְוָה

The command in the verse shares its root with the word for a commandment.

tzav: command

צַו

This short command form echoes the verse’s emphasis on an issued directive.

What finally stands is governed by the LORD’s counsel and command, not by human speech or planning alone.

Many plans are in the heart of a man, but the counsel of the LORD, it will stand.
Proverbs 19:21 · SDVHuman plans may multiply, but what stands is tied to the LORD’s counsel.
Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient days the things not yet made, saying, My counsel will stand, and all that I delight in I will make.
Isaiah 46:10 · SDVThe LORD’s counsel is presented as what stands and brings what is intended to completion.
The commander of a hundred answered and said, Lord, I am not enough for you to come under my roof, but only speak the word, and my servant will be healed.
Matthew 8:8 · SDVThe centurion trusts that the Lord’s spoken word can bring about what he commands.
For he says, and it comes to be; he commands, and it stands.
Psalm 33:9 · SDV

The verses share the Hebrew roots for “said,” “came to be,” and “commanded.” Psalm 33:9 states the relationship directly: what comes to be follows the command; Lamentations asks whether it can happen apart from it.
