This verse in the King James

King James wording
Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee: thou saidst, Fear not.

God’s “Fear not” is carried by nearness: the reply begins with arrival, not explanation.

When you call, nearness meets you in the very day fear is present. “Fear not” comes with that nearness; it does not deny that the day is frightening.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Fear does not prove you are abandoned: the verse places God’s approach inside the day you call.

קָרַבְתָּ

qāravta

GROWS FROM

ק־ר־ב

q-r-b

to approach, come near

“draw near” in this verse is qāravta. The word for God drawing near shares its root with qorbān, something brought near. Nearness is not just distance closing; it carries the sense of approach and offering oneself into reach.

ALSO GROWS

qārōb: near, close

קָרוֹב

This is the same root’s word for nearness, echoed in the promise that the LORD is near to those who call.

qorbān: an offering brought near

קָרְבָּן

Its root makes an offering an act of approach, illuminating the closeness expressed in “Thou drewest near.”

אֶקְרָאֲךָ

ʾeqraʾekha

GROWS FROM

ק־ר־א

q-r-ʾ

to call, cry out, summon

“called upon” in this verse is ʾeqraʾekha. The cry is a summons directed toward someone, and here it is met by approach. “Called” and “drewest near” come from distinct roots, but their shared q-r sound links the calling and the coming close.

ALSO GROWS

qəriʾāh: a calling or reading aloud

קְרִיאָה

The branch keeps the voice in view: the call is a spoken reaching toward another.

miqrāʾ: a convocation, a called gathering

מִקְרָא

A call can gather people into presence; here the call is answered by God’s presence.

A cry is met by nearness: the reply comes as presence, and presence answers fear.

The LORD is near to those whose heart is broken, and delivers those crushed in breath.
Psalm 34:18 · SDVThe LORD’s nearness meets a broken heart in the very place where distress is felt.
Then you shall call, and the LORD shall answer; you shall cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If you take away from the midst of you the yoke, the stretching of the finger, and speaking emptiness.
Isaiah 58:9 · SDVThe call receives an answer that is itself a declaration of presence: “Here I am.”
The LORD is near to all who call out to him, to all who call out to him in truth.
Psalm 145:18 · SDV

“Nigh” (⁨קָרוֹב⁩, qārōb) grows from the same ⁨ק־ר־ב⁩ root as “drewest near” here, while “call” repeats the q-r-ʾ root of “called.” Psalm 145:18 brings those same two movements together: calling and divine nearness.
