This verse in the King James

King James wording
Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the beasts which ye shall eat among all the beasts that are on the earth.

The verse’s first “beasts” means “living creature,” so the food boundary is drawn from within life itself.

Eating appears within a defined scope among the living creatures of the earth. The verse names a distinction before the following lines give its criteria, placing discernment at the heart of receiving food.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the assumption that every creature belongs to one undifferentiated category of food: this verse marks a distinction among them.

חַיָּה

chayyah living creature

GROWS FROM

חיה

To live, to be alive.

The KJV renders both ⁨חַיָּה⁩ (chayyah, living creature) and ⁨בְּהֵמָה⁩ (behemah, animal or beast) as “beasts,” concealing that Hebrew uses two different words. The first grows from ⁨חיה⁩, “to live,” so the verse names living creatures before drawing a distinction about eating.

ALSO GROWS

chay: Living, alive.

חַי

This is the root’s direct description of what is alive, bringing the life inside “living creature” into view.

chayyim: Life.

חַיִּים

The same root names life itself, linking the creature in the verse to the condition of being alive.

Eating is framed through named permissions and distinctions within the living world.

Every creeping thing that lives shall be food for you; as the green grass I have given you all.
Genesis 9:3 · SDVThe scope of what may be eaten is expressly named, here as “every moving thing that liveth.”
Whatever splits the hoof and is cleft through, and brings up the cud among the beasts, that you may eat.
Leviticus 11:3 · SDVThe next verse gives the observable distinctions that mark which animals may be eaten.
And the voice spoke to him again the second time, What God has cleansed, do not make common.
Acts 10:15 · SDVA vision about food again turns on how creatures are classified and what may be received.
And God said, "Let the earth bring out living soul after its kind, cattle, creeping thing, and beast of the earth after its kind." And it was so.
Genesis 1:24 · SDV

The “living creature” in Genesis and the first “beasts” here share the Hebrew root ⁨חיה⁩ (ch-y-h, to live). Genesis names life among the earth’s creatures; Leviticus places eating within distinctions among those living creatures.
