King James wording
King James Version
And there shall be no man in the tabernacle of the congregation when he goeth in to make an atonement in the holy place, until he come out, and have made an atonement for himself, and for his household, and for all the congregation of Israel.THE KEY
The one who enters to cover the assembly is included first; the covering widens from him through his household to all Israel.
THE MEANING
The priest enters alone, yet the verse holds his own life, his household, and all Israel within the same covering. The person who carries the act is included in its reach before that reach widens through household to the whole assembly.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that the one who bears responsibility for others stands outside the need for covering: the priest is named first among those included.
THE ROOT
כִּפֶּר
kippēr
GROWS FROM
כפר
cover, wipe over
“make a covering” in this verse is kippēr. The repeated verb is one act of covering, but its recipients widen outward: the priest, his household, and all Israel. The related כַּפֹּרֶת (kappōret) names the cover over the ark, while כֹּפֶר (kōfer) names a ransom; the root carries a range from sanctuary covering to a price that averts loss.
ALSO GROWS
kappōret: cover of the ark, often rendered “mercy seat”
כַּפֹּרֶת
This branch uses the same root for the cover at the heart of the sanctuary, giving the verse’s act of atonement a concrete image.
kōfer: ransom, a price paid to avert loss
כֹּפֶר
This branch shows the root reaching beyond a physical cover to a payment that answers a claim.
קְהַל
qehāl
GROWS FROM
קהל
assemble, gather
The word translated “congregation” names a gathered whole, not a loose list of individuals. Its root also forms the verb “gather,” so the final circle is a people held together as an assembly.
ALSO GROWS
qāhāl: assembly, gathered congregation
קָהָל
This noun names all Israel as the gathered community included in the covering.
haqhel: gather, assemble the people
הַקְהֵל
This verb makes visible the gathering inside the word for congregation: the covering reaches a people brought together as one assembly.
THE PATTERN
The same covering reaches the individual, the household, and the gathered people, with cleansing named as its fruit.
For on that day the priest makes a covering for you, to cleanse you, so that you may be clean from all your shortcomings before the LORD.A Psalm of David, Maschil. Flourishing is the one whose rebellion is released, whose shortcomings are covered.Flourishing are those whose rebellion is released, and whose shortcomings are covered.THE THREAD
For on that day the priest makes a covering for you, to cleanse you, so that you may be clean from all your shortcomings before the LORD.Leviticus 16:30 repeats כִּפֶּר (kippēr, cover or make atonement), the same root that governs this verse, and names cleansing as the result. The covering extends to the people so they stand clean before the LORD.
