This verse in the King James

King James wording
But if he wash them not, nor bathe his flesh; then he shall bear his iniquity.

The refusal itself is the hinge: what is left unwashed becomes what the person must carry.

When you leave the cleansing undone, the condition remains yours to carry; ignoring it does not make it vanish. The verb translated “bear” means to lift or carry, giving the consequence weight and movement. The verse joins the unwashed garment and unbathed flesh to the bearer’s burden.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that an uncleansed condition disappears when ignored is undone: refusal leaves it with the one who bears it.

נָשָׂא

nasa

GROWS FROM

נשא

To lift, carry, bear, or take up.

“carry his crookedness” in this verse is nasa. ⁨נָשָׂא⁩ (nasa) means to lift, carry, or bear, so “bear” holds both weight and motion. The verse makes the unresolved condition something carried by the person who does not wash, rather than a label detached from them.

ALSO GROWS

nissāʾ: Be lifted, be raised, or be exalted.

נִשָּׂא

The same lift-and-carry root shifts from bearing a burden to being lifted up, showing the movement held inside ⁨נָשָׂא⁩.

nāśîʾ: A chief or prince.

נָשִׂיא

The title carries the sense of one raised or elevated, preserving the root’s upward motion.

What is left unwashed or hidden remains with its bearer; what is brought into the open can be cleansed.

And if a living soul misses the mark, and hears the voice of an oath, and he is a witness, whether he has seen it or perceived it; if he does not speak it out, then he carries his crookedness.
Leviticus 5:1 · SDVThe withheld testimony leaves the person bearing the iniquity, echoing this verse’s link between omission and carried burden.
Whoever covers his rebellions shall not prosper, but whoever speaks them into the open and lets them go shall be shown compassion.
Proverbs 28:13 · SDVCovering keeps the failure with its bearer, while confession and forsaking open a path to mercy.
If we speak our shortcomings into the open, he is steady and aligned, to release our shortcomings, and to cleanse us from all crookedness.
1 John 1:9 · SDVConfession is joined to forgiveness and cleansing, showing that what is brought into the open does not have to remain concealed and carried.
Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the plunder with the strong, because he poured out his living soul to death, and was counted with the rebels. He carried the falling short of many, and for the rebels he stepped in.
Isaiah 53:12 · SDV

Leviticus attaches the burden to the person who leaves cleansing undone; Isaiah uses the same ⁨נָשָׂא⁩ verb for the one who bears the missing of many. The root holds the acts together while the bearer shifts.
