King James wording
King James Version
Neither shall he go out of the sanctuary, nor profane the sanctuary of his God; for the crown of the anointing oil of his God is upon him: I am the LORD.THE KEY
The priest’s crown is the anointing itself: a mark of consecration that binds him to the sanctuary’s charge.
THE MEANING
The bearer of the anointing remains within the sanctuary’s charge and does not make it common, because the anointing oil rests upon him as a crown. What is set apart in him binds him to what is set apart around him.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that sacred status is a privilege without a boundary: the one marked by anointing remains accountable to the place and charge he bears.
THE ROOT
נֵזֶר
nezer
GROWS FROM
נזר
To set apart, dedicate, or consecrate.
Nezer means crown or diadem and also carries the sense of consecration; its root, nazar, means to set apart or dedicate. The same root forms nazir, a person set apart by a vow, so the crown is more than ornament: it marks the priest’s belonging and the charge that comes with it.
ALSO GROWS
nazar: To set apart or dedicate oneself.
נָזַר
The crown carries this root’s idea of separation: the priest is marked for a particular sacred charge.
nazir: A person set apart by a vow; a Nazirite.
נָזִיר
Like the priest’s nezer, the nazir’s name ties being set apart to a life bounded by consecration.
מִקְדָּשׁ
miqdash
GROWS FROM
קדש
To set apart as sacred.
“set-apart place” in this verse is miqdash. Miqdash, sanctuary, grows from the same root as qadosh, set apart, so sacred space and sacred status belong to one word family. The warning against profaning the sanctuary guards the set-apartness that defines the priest’s charge.
ALSO GROWS
qadosh: Set apart, sacred.
קָדוֹשׁ
The sanctuary is a place marked by the same set-apart quality named by qadosh.
qodesh: Set-apartness; something sacred.
קֹדֶשׁ
This branch names the quality the sanctuary embodies and the priest must not profane.
מִשְׁחַת
mishchat
GROWS FROM
משח
To smear with oil; by extension, to anoint.
The word for anointing comes from mashach, to anoint, and mashiach names one who is anointed. The oil marks the priest as set apart to a role; joined with nezer, it makes the crown a sign of consecration with a boundary.
ALSO GROWS
mashach: To anoint with oil.
מָשַׁח
This is the action behind the oil resting upon the priest as his consecrating mark.
mashiach: An anointed one.
מָשִׁיחַ
This related word names the person bearing the mark, connecting the priest’s oil to an identity and role.
THE PATTERN
Being set apart by God gives a person a defined belonging and a charge that shapes what they do.
Then you take the anointing oil, and pour it upon his head, and anoint him.At that time the LORD separated the tribe of Levi, to lift the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD and minister to him, and to bless in his nature, to this day.But you are a chosen lineage, a royal priesthood, a set-apart nation, a people made his own, so that you may tell out the excellences of the one who called you out of darkness into his wondrous light.THE THREAD
And you shall not go out from the opening of the tent of meeting, lest you die, for the anointing oil of the LORD is upon you. And they did according to the word of Moses. This verse joins the same anointing oil resting on the priests to a command that they remain at the tabernacle. The shared root משח (mashach, to anoint) makes the oil’s presence a sign of active consecration, with a boundary attached.
