This verse in the King James

King James wording
Ye shall bring out of your habitations two wave loaves of two tenth deals: they shall be of fine flour; they shall be baken with leaven; they are the firstfruits unto the LORD.

These firstfruits share their root with the firstborn: even as two fully leavened loaves, they stand as the harvest’s first emergence.

The verse holds together what can seem incompatible: these loaves are leavened and fully worked, yet they are still called firstfruits. The beginning comes out of your dwelling and takes the form of bread carried into view.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It unsettles the assumption that firstfruits must be raw or untouched: here, the first yield is milled, leavened, and baked.

בִּכּוּרִים

bikkurim

GROWS FROM

בכר

To be first or early; the root also gives the word for a firstborn.

“first-ripened” in this verse is bikkurim. The word for firstfruits shares its root with the word for firstborn, joining the first yield of the land to the first arrival of a family. These loaves are not just a sample of the crop: they mark its first emergence, already transformed into bread.

ALSO GROWS

bekhor: The firstborn, the one who arrives first.

בְּכוֹר

This shared root links the land’s first yield with the family’s first arrival: both mark a beginning.

bikkur: The earliest fruit to ripen.

בִּכּוּר

This singular form makes the timing inside “firstfruits” visible: the offering is the crop’s earliest yield.

The first yield stands as the visible beginning of a larger harvest, brought forward before God.

The first of the first-ripened of your ground you shall bring into the house of the LORD your God. You shall not boil a kid in his mother's milk.
Exodus 23:19 · SDVThe first yield is brought into view as the beginning of what the land will produce.
And now, behold, I have brought the first-ripened fruit of the ground, which you, O LORD, have given me. And you set it down before the LORD your God, and bow down before the LORD your God.
Deuteronomy 26:10 · SDVThe firstfruits are presented as the first visible portion of the land’s yield.
By his own will he bore us forth through the word of truth, so that we might be a kind of firstfruit of his created things.
James 1:18 · SDVThe image of firstfruits describes an early beginning that stands within a larger creation.
The first of the first-ripened of your ground you shall bring into the house of the LORD your God. You shall not boil a kid in his mother's milk.
Exodus 23:19 · SDV

Exodus uses the same firstfruits root, ⁨בכר⁩ (b-k-r), joining the land’s first yield to the act of bringing it before the LORD. Leviticus gives that beginning a particular form: two loaves, leavened and baked.
