This verse in the King James

King James wording
Moreover ye shall eat no manner of blood, whether it be of fowl or of beast, in any of your dwellings.

The hidden boundary is that life cannot be treated as ordinary food, even in the privacy of home.

Blood carries life, so it is set apart from ordinary nourishment. The boundary reaches every dwelling, placing the regard for life in the reader’s everyday spaces as well as at the altar.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the assumption that whatever can be eaten is simply ours to consume. Blood marks a limit because life is not ordinary food.

מוֹשְׁבֹתֵיכֶם

moshvoteikhem

GROWS FROM

יָשַׁב

yashav

to sit, remain, dwell

“in any of your settlements” in this verse is moshvoteikhem. The word rendered “dwellings” comes from the same root as sitting and settling. The boundary therefore reaches every place where life is inhabited, not only the altar.

ALSO GROWS

moshav: seat, dwelling, settlement

מוֹשָׁב

A place of dwelling shares its root with a seat, linking habitation with the act of settling in a place.

yoshev: one who sits or dwells

יוֹשֵׁב

The dwelling is the place where someone remains; the verse places its boundary across all such places.

תֹּאכְלוּ

to'khelu

GROWS FROM

אכל

ʾ-k-l

to eat, consume

“eat” in this verse is to'khelu. The verb for eating shares its root with words for food and consumption. Blood is kept outside ordinary nourishment, a sharp boundary beside the claim that life is in the blood.

ALSO GROWS

ma'akhal: food, something eaten

מַאֲכָל

The root names both the act of eating and what is taken in; the verse marks blood as outside ordinary food.

akhilah: eating, consumption

אֲכִילָה

This noun makes the act of taking something inward explicit, the very act the verse forbids with blood.

Life-bearing blood remains outside ordinary consumption wherever people dwell.

But flesh in its living soul, its blood, you shall not eat.
Genesis 9:4 · SDVThe verse directly joins blood with life and places both beyond ordinary eating.
For the living soul of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make a covering for your living souls, for it is the blood that covers the living soul.
Leviticus 17:11 · SDVBlood is named as the bearer of life and given a set-apart place at the altar.
But that we write to them to hold off from the stains of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.
Acts 15:20 · SDVThe boundary around blood appears again among practices the assembly is to refrain from.
For the living soul of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make a covering for your living souls, for it is the blood that covers the living soul.
Leviticus 17:11 · SDV

Both verses use ⁨דָּם⁩ (dam, blood), and this verse states why the boundary matters: the life of the flesh is in the blood. Blood is presented as life-bearing and given a set-apart place, not as ordinary nourishment.
