King James wording
King James Version
Therefore shall ye abide at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation day and night seven days, and keep the charge of the LORD, that ye die not: for so I am commanded.THE KEY
The seven-day watch is not a delay before the sacred work; it is the sacred work, and life is bound to its keeping.
THE MEANING
Your nearness to what is set apart is not a moment you pass through; it asks for a whole span of attentive presence. The charge is guarded day and night because life and the keeping of what is entrusted are joined. The warning remains stark: neglect here ends in death.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that being present for a sacred moment completes the obligation; the charge remains through the whole watch.
THE ROOT
שָׁמַר
shamar
GROWS FROM
שמר
to guard, watch over, keep
“keep the charge” in this verse is shamar. The verse pairs the act of guarding with the charge to be guarded: keeping itself is the work. Here, life is bound to sustained watchfulness at the threshold.
ALSO GROWS
shamar: to keep, guard, or watch over
שָׁמַר
The verb names the ongoing act required through day and night.
mishmeret: a charge, watch, or guard duty
מִשְׁמֶרֶת
This is the entrusted duty that the verse says must be kept.
shomer: a keeper or watcher
שֹׁמֵר
It names the one whose attention preserves what has been entrusted.
תֵּשְׁבוּ
teshevu
GROWS FROM
ישב
to sit, remain, or dwell
“settle” in this verse is teshevu. The word carries the sense of dwelling, not merely passing through. The watch takes place at the doorway and fills seven days and nights, making sustained presence part of the charge.
ALSO GROWS
yashav: to sit, remain, or dwell
יָשַׁב
The root holds together staying in place and inhabiting a space.
moshav: a dwelling place or settlement
מוֹשָׁב
It shows how remaining can become an established place of presence.
yoshev: one who sits or dwells
יוֹשֵׁב
It names a person by the posture of remaining in a place.
THE PATTERN
A sacred trust is kept through sustained watchfulness, and readiness itself is part of the service.
The son who is priest in his place clothes himself in them seven days, when he comes into the tent of meeting to serve in the set-apart place. And they shall keep his watch, and the watch of the whole assembly before the tent of the assembly, to do the work of the dwelling.Flourishing are those servants whom the lord will find awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will gird himself, and have them recline, and come alongside and wait on them.THE THREAD
And they shall keep his watch, and the watch of the whole assembly before the tent of the assembly, to do the work of the dwelling.Leviticus joins the act of guarding to the charge being guarded; Numbers repeats that same root and extends the charge to the whole congregation. The threshold watch opens into a shared keeping, not simply a period of waiting.
