This verse in the King James

King James wording
In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

The leaven is not merely a lie someone tells; it is a performed self that can spread through the whole crowd.

You can be pressed into a crowd while a hidden performance passes through it. Here, hypocrisy is the leaven: a performed outer self whose influence can spread beyond the person performing it. The warning names that spread, not just the individual mask.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie is that a performed public face is harmless as long as each person keeps it to themselves. Leaven is the image for how a hidden posture can spread through a whole community.

ὑπόκρισις

hypokrisis

GROWS FROM

ὑποκριν-

Acting a part; feigning.

“the mask” in this verse is hypokrisis. The Greek ⁨ὑπόκρισις⁩ (hypokrisis, hypocrisy) belongs to a word family with the sense of acting a part. The verse calls that performed outer self leaven: its influence can pass from one person into the whole gathering.

ALSO GROWS

hypokritēs: Actor; hypocrite.

ὑποκριτής

The related noun joins the staged role to the person who performs it.

hypokrinomai: To play a part; feign.

ὑποκρίνομαι

The verb makes clear that hypocrisy is an enacted role, not just an inward thought.

ζύμη

zymē

GROWS FROM

ζυμ-

To ferment; leaven.

Leaven works after it is mixed in, spreading through dough beyond the point where it entered. Calling hypocrisy leaven reveals its reach: a performed self can become a shared pattern.

ALSO GROWS

zymoō: To leaven; ferment.

ζυμόω

The verb names the process of spreading through the mixture, giving force to the warning about hypocrisy’s influence.

azymos: Unleavened; without leaven.

ἄζυμος

This related word shows the same image from the other side: a whole can be characterized by whether leaven is present within it.

What is mixed into a whole can keep working unseen until it changes the whole.

They are all adulterers, like an oven kindled by the baker. He rests from rousing the dough and from kneading it, until it has soured.
Hosea 7:4 · SDVThe baker waits while the leaven works through the dough out of sight.
Then Jesus said to them, Perceive, and hold yourselves back from the leaven of the separated ones and of the Sadducees.
Matthew 16:6 · SDVJesus again uses leaven for an influence that can spread through a group.
Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?
1 Corinthians 5:6 · SDVA small amount of leaven is enough to affect the whole mass.
Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?
1 Corinthians 5:6 · SDV

Both verses use ⁨ζύμη⁩ (zymē, leaven) for what spreads through a whole. Luke names the leaven as hypocrisy; this verse makes its reach plain: even a little can affect the whole lump.
