King James wording
King James Version
The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment.THE KEY
Food and clothing serve the person: the living soul is more than what feeds it, and the body is more than what covers it.
THE MEANING
Your living soul exceeds what feeds it, and your body exceeds what covers it. Food sustains; clothing covers, but neither contains the person. The verse speaks to the anxious sense that these provisions are the whole measure of life.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that securing food is the same as securing life, or that clothing is the measure of the body.
THE ROOT
ψυχή
psychē
GROWS FROM
ψυχ-
psych-
The living self: life, living soul, or person.
The Greek word ψυχή (psychē, living soul or life) can appear in English as either “life” or “soul.” Here, “life” concerns the whole living self, not merely survival.
ALSO GROWS
psychē: Living soul, life, or person.
ψυχή
Luke’s “life” and Mark’s “soul” use this same Greek noun, keeping the living self together beneath English’s different renderings.
psychikos: Natural; pertaining to the living self or soul.
ψυχικός
This related form describes what belongs to the natural person in 1 Corinthians 2:14, showing the stem can characterize a whole person, not just the length of a life.
τροφή
trophē
GROWS FROM
τρεφ-
treph-
To nourish, rear, or bring up.
The Greek word for food, τροφή (trophē, nourishment or food), belongs to a family about nourishing and rearing. The sentence places what sustains the living soul beneath the soul itself.
ALSO GROWS
trephō: Nourish, feed, or bring up.
τρέφω
Food is named by what it does for life: it nourishes the person, but is not the person.
trophos: Nourisher, nurse, or one who rears.
τροφός
This related word makes the family’s sustaining role visible: nourishment serves the life being raised.
THE PATTERN
The life and body exceed the material provisions that nourish and cover them.
And the LORD God shaped the ground-being, Adam, from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and Adam became a living soul. And he bent you low, and made you hunger, and fed you with manna, which you had never perceived, nor had your fathers, so that he might make you perceive that humankind does not live by bread alone, but by every word that goes out from the mouth of the LORD does humankind live. And having food and covering, let these be enough for us.THE THREAD
For what would it help a human if he gained the whole world, and lost his living soul?Luke’s “life” and Mark’s “soul” are forms of the same Greek noun ψυχή (psychē, living soul or life); English changes the rendering while Greek keeps the same living self in view. Mark extends Luke’s measure beyond food and clothing: even the whole world cannot equal that life.
