King James wording
King James Version
Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath.THE KEY
The faithful servant is not merely praised; he is set in place over everything his master possesses.
THE MEANING
The promise is that faithfulness within an entrusted role leads to a charge over the master’s whole estate. The verse speaks now of trust widening into responsibility for what once lay beyond the servant’s care.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that faithful service only preserves the small role already held: here, faithfulness leads to a charge over all the master possesses.
THE ROOT
καταστήσει
katastēsei
GROWS FROM
ἵστημι (histēmi), with κατά (kata-)
Stand; set in place.
The verb behind “make ... ruler” means to set or appoint someone in a position. The servant is not only called worthy; he is placed over the whole estate, a concrete act of entrusting that the English word “ruler” can leave hidden.
ALSO GROWS
histēmi: To stand, or to set.
ἵστημι
This base verb shows that the appointment places the servant in a defined position.
anistēmi: To rise or stand up.
ἀνίστημι
This related compound keeps the image of standing, making the servant’s new standing part of the promise.
stasis: A standing, position, or state.
στάσις
This related noun names the position into which the servant is set.
THE PATTERN
Faithfulness within an entrusted sphere becomes the ground for a wider charge.
And Joseph found favor in his eyes, and he served him; and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he placed into his hand. His lord said to him, Well done, good and steady servant. You have been steady over a few things; I will set you over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.As each has received a gift, serve it to one another as good stewards of the many-colored favor of God.THE THREAD
You made him a little lower than the messengers; you crowned him with weight and honor, and you set him over the works of your hands.Luke’s “make ... ruler” and Hebrews’ “set him over” use forms of the same Greek verb, καθίστημι (kathistēmi), to set or appoint. The shared root makes authority an act of placement over what belongs to another: the master’s estate in Luke, and the works of God’s hands in Hebrews.
