This verse in the King James

King James wording
For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.

A real invitation can still end in no participation: being called is not yet tasting.

This verse draws a sharp line between receiving an invitation and sharing the meal. Those who turn from the offered place do not taste the supper. The welcome is real, and so is the loss of what was offered.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Being invited automatically means receiving what is offered.

κεκλημένων

keklēmenōn

GROWS FROM

καλέω

kaleō

to call, summon, or invite

The word translated “bidden” comes from ⁨καλέω⁩ (kaleō, call/invite): these men have truly been called, yet the verse does not equate being called with sharing the meal. The same call-family appears in ⁨ἐκκλησία⁩ (ekklēsia, assembly), tying the invitation to gathering, and making the gap between the call and participation visible.

ALSO GROWS

klētos: One who is called or invited.

κλητός

This related word makes clear that being called names a real invitation, while Luke’s verse shows that invitation alone does not mean the supper is shared.

ekklēsia: An assembly or gathered community.

ἐκκλησία

The call-family connects invitation with gathering; here, the supper is the offered place of shared participation.

An offered meal becomes shared experience when the invitation is received.

Ho, every one who thirsts, come to the waters, and whoever has no silver, come, break open and eat. Yes, come, break open wine and milk, without silver and without price.
Isaiah 55:1 · SDVThe invitation names the provision and opens it freely, but the hearer still has to come and eat.
Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine I mix.
Proverbs 9:5 · SDVWisdom’s invitation becomes a shared meal through eating and drinking.
Look, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.
Revelation 3:20 · SDVThe opened door turns a call into a meal shared together.
And he sent out his servants to call those who had been called to the wedding, and they would not come.
Matthew 22:3 · SDV

Matthew uses the same ⁨καλέω⁩ (kaleō, call/invite) family for both calling the guests and describing them as bidden. It names their refusal to come; Luke states the result plainly: they do not taste the supper.
