This verse in the King James

King James wording
For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day.

The Son of Man’s day is as unmistakable as lightning that flashes across the whole sky.

The Son of Man’s day is not something you locate by following a whispered claim of “Lo here” or “Lo there.” Like lightning spanning the sky, it is visible across the whole field. Its arrival carries its own evidence.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse undoes the belief that you must follow someone to a hidden or local appearance of the Son of Man.

ἀστραπή

astrapē

GROWS FROM

ἀστραπ-

astrap-

flash; lightning

“flashing” in this verse is astrapē. The Greek names lightning with ⁨ἀστραπή⁩ and describes it with ⁨ἀστράπτουσα⁩, a verb from the same word family: the lightning is “lightning-ing.” The repeated root makes the image self-evident, the flash itself makes the Son of Man’s day known across the sky.

ALSO GROWS

astraptō: to flash like lightning

ἀστράπτω

This is the verb family behind “lighteneth,” linking the lightning to its flashing action.

astrapaios: lightning-like

ἀστραπαῖος

This related form carries the lightning image into a description of something that appears like a flash.

λάμπει

lampei

GROWS FROM

⁨λαμπ-⁩ (lamp-, from ⁨λάμπω⁩, lampō)

shine; give light

The verse moves from the lightning’s flash to ⁨λάμπει⁩, “shines,” describing light extending from one side of the sky to the other. The image is not merely suddenness; it is radiance that fills the visible span.

ALSO GROWS

lampas: lamp; torch

λαμπάς

A lamp gives off light that can be seen, echoing the verse’s emphasis on visible radiance.

lampros: bright; radiant

λαμπρός

This related form names the brightness that makes an appearance conspicuous.

The manifestation of God’s action is described as reaching beyond a hidden place into the full field of sight.

He straightens it under all the heavens, and his light upon the wings of the earth.
Job 37:3 · SDVLightning is pictured as extending under the whole heaven and reaching the ends of the earth.
Look, he comes with the clouds, and every eye will see him, and those who pierced him. All the tribes of the earth will beat their breasts over him. Yes, amen.
Revelation 1:7 · SDVThe coming is described as something every eye sees, extending its visibility across the earth.
For as the lightning comes out from the east and shines all the way to the west, so is the presence of the Son of Man.
Matthew 24:27 · SDV

Matthew repeats the Greek word ⁨ἀστραπή⁩ (astrapē), “lightning,” for the same image. Its east-to-west span opens Luke’s “one part” to “the other part” as a picture of a coming that is openly seen.
