King James wording
King James Version
And hearing the multitude pass by, he asked what it meant.THE KEY
He does not yet know what is passing; the question born from hearing is already the beginning of recognition.
THE MEANING
You can be surrounded by motion and still not know what is passing. Hearing comes before recognition: what reaches you as sound becomes a question, and the question opens a way for an answer.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that you must already understand a moment before you can ask what it means.
THE ROOT
ἀκούσας
akousas
GROWS FROM
ἀκου
akou-
To hear or listen.
The verb begins with what reaches him by sound, before he knows what is passing. English can make hearing sound passive, but here it opens a movement toward recognition: he asks, and the crowd’s motion becomes intelligible.
ALSO GROWS
akoē: Hearing; what is heard, a report.
ἀκοή
The same root names both the act of hearing and the report that reaches someone; the crowd is first encountered as sound.
hypakouō: To heed or obey by listening.
ὑπακούω
This branch shows hearing that becomes response, echoing the verse’s movement from hearing to asking.
parakouō: To hear amiss or disregard what is heard.
παρακούω
This branch shows that hearing can be received or missed; here, the sound is attended to closely enough to become a question.
THE PATTERN
Hearing becomes a path toward recognition when it is met with a response.
And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak, for your servant hears and responds.I will hear and respond to what God the LORD will speak, for he will speak wholeness to his people and to his faithful ones, and let them not turn back to dullness. And he said, Who are you, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus, whom you pursue. It is hard for you to kick against the goads.THE THREAD
And they told him that Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.The answer names the one passing: Yeshua (יֵשׁוּעַ, Yeshua: deliverance from narrowness into spaciousness) of Nazareth (נָצְרַת, Natzrat: city of the watcher). The question turns anonymous movement into a named encounter, with the place-name echoing the attention that began it.
