King James wording
King James Version
And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow:THE KEY
Your accusation is not outside the judgment; it supplies its measure.
THE MEANING
Your words do more than describe the person before you; they show the measure you carry. The servant calls his master austere and says he takes and reaps without sowing, and those claims become the terms of his judgment. What you say of another can become the very standard that tests your account.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that an accusation stays safely outside the speaker: here, the servant’s own description becomes the basis of judgment.
THE ROOT
κρίνω
krinō
GROWS FROM
κριν-
krin-
To separate or distinguish, then decide.
“judge” in this verse is krinō. The servant’s description becomes the criterion by which his account is decided. The judgment takes its measure from the words he himself speaks.
ALSO GROWS
krisis: Decision or judgment.
κρίσις
The servant’s words provide the basis for the decision pronounced over him.
kritēs: A judge; one who decides.
κριτής
The master acts as judge, while the servant’s own account supplies the standard applied.
krima: A judgment or verdict.
κρίμα
The verdict answers the servant’s description with a judgment drawn from his own words.
THE PATTERN
A declared measure returns as the standard by which the speaker is exposed.
Death and life are in the hand of the tongue, and those who love it eat its fruit. For by your words you will be made aligned, and by your words you will be condemned. Therefore you have no word to answer with, O human, whoever you are who judges others, for in whatever you judge in another you press the sentence down upon yourself, for you who judge practice the very same things.THE THREAD
For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged, and with what measure you measure, it will be measured to you.The Greek word for “judge,” κρίνω (krinō), connects the two verses: Luke shows the servant judged by his own words, while Matthew names the returning measure. The servant’s account is already the standard applied to him.
