King James wording
King James Version
And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him.THE KEY
What the KJV calls the crowd’s attention is literally their hanging from him: their listening holds the people together and leaves his opponents unable to move.
THE MEANING
A voice can hold your attention so completely that listening becomes a shared force. When a whole people hangs on his words, those seeking to act against him cannot find a move.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that listening is passive and powerless: the crowd’s attention is what prevents their opponents from acting.
THE ROOT
ἐξεκρέματο
exekremato
GROWS FROM
κρεμ-
krem-
hang; be suspended from
“hung on him” in this verse is exekremato. The verb gives attention a physical image: the people are hanging from him as they listen. The same word family says the law and prophets hang on the two commandments, showing what depends on what it is fastened to.
ALSO GROWS
krematai: hangs
κρέμαται
In Matthew 22:40, the law and prophets hang on the two commandments; here, the people hang on Jesus as they listen.
kremasthentōn: those who were hanged
κρεμασθέντων
Luke 23:39 uses the same word family for people suspended on a cross, keeping the concrete image of hanging visible beneath “attentive.”
THE PATTERN
What holds a person’s attention begins to direct where they turn and how they move.
My son, give ear to my words; bend your ear to my sayings.Bend your ear and come to me. Hear and respond, and your living soul shall live. I will cut a covenant of the ages with you, the steady faithful loves of David. My sheep hear and respond to my voice, and I perceive them, and they follow me.THE THREAD
On these two commandments hang all the instruction and the prophets.Matthew uses κρέμαται (krematai, “hangs”), from the same κρεμ- word family as Luke’s ἐξεκρέματο (exekremato, “was hanging from”). There, the law and prophets hang on the commandments; here, the people hang on Jesus’ voice, both verses show what is held in dependence by what it is fastened to.
