This verse in the King James

King James wording
But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day’s journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.

Luke’s Greek makes the company a people of the way, then says they traveled a day’s way, together on the road, yet mistaken about who was with them.

You can assume the one you love is held within your familiar circle and keep moving with that certainty. When the assumption breaks, the search goes through kin and known faces. A shared road does not guarantee shared awareness.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse undoes the belief that shared company guarantees shared awareness: someone can be presumed present and still be missing from view.

GROWS FROM

ὁδός

hodos

way, road

The Greek word translated “company” belongs to the way and journey word-family, and the verse then uses ⁨ὁδός⁩ plainly in “a day’s journey.” English separates the group from the route; Greek ties them together as people traveling the way, even as they assume Jesus is with them.

ALSO GROWS

exodos: departure, going out

ἔξοδος

This compound carries the same way-word into a path leading out.

hodegos: guide, leader

ὁδηγός

A guide leads someone along the way, extending the root from road to the one who shows it.

hodoiporia: journey, travel

ὁδοιπορία

This word makes the way itself part of the act of traveling, echoing the day’s journey in the verse.

Assumption directs a search toward the familiar people or places expected to contain the one who is missing.

And he said, I seek my brothers. Tell me, I pray you, where they shepherd their flocks.
Genesis 37:16 · SDVJoseph’s search follows a family bond and asks where his brothers are expected to be.
I will rise now and circle the city, in the streets and the wide places, and I will seek him whom my living soul loves; I seek him, but I do not find him.
Song of Solomon 3:2 · SDVThe beloved is sought along familiar streets and ways, where the seeker expects to find him but does not.
Jesus said to her, Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking? She, supposing him to be the one who tends the garden, said to him, Sir, if you have carried him off, tell me where you have placed him, and I will lift him away.
John 20:15 · SDVMary assumes the nearby Jesus is the gardener, and that assumption shapes where she thinks the one she seeks can be found.
And they said to one another, Was not our heart burning within us as he spoke with us on the road, and as he threw open the writings to us?
Luke 24:32 · SDV

Luke 2’s company belongs to the Greek way-word family, and Luke 24 uses that same ⁨ὁδός⁩ word for “the way.” Here, companions walk with Jesus before recognizing what is happening; the shared road holds more presence than they first perceive.
