King James wording
King James Version
And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.THE KEY
The same Greek verb first describes the two going down the road, then Jesus joining their journey.
THE MEANING
You can be in motion while the meaning of the day is still out of reach. The road you are walking can become shared ground when Jesus draws near.
THE ROOT
ἐπορεύοντο
eporeuonto
GROWS FROM
πορευ- (from πορεύομαι, poreuomai)
to travel, to go along a way
“were going” in this verse is eporeuonto. English “went” sounds like bare movement, but Luke repeats this journey verb in the next verse when Jesus goes with them. The added συν- (“with”) makes their existing road shared movement.
ALSO GROWS
poreia: journey, course of travel
πορεία
This related noun makes the ongoing journey visible in the verb’s simple act of going.
syneporeueto: was going with them
συνεπορεύετο
The same journey verb returns with συν- (“with”): their movement becomes a road Jesus shares.
THE PATTERN
A journey that seems like simple departure can become the setting for presence and encounter.
And Jacob woke out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not perceive it.And it happened, while they talked and searched together, that Jesus himself drew near and went with them. Then the Breath said to Philip, Go near, and cling to this chariot.THE THREAD
And it happened, while they talked and searched together, that Jesus himself drew near and went with them. The Greek uses the same journey verb in both verses; Luke adds συν- (“with”) when Jesus joins them. Their road does not change, but it becomes a journey shared with him.
