This verse in the King James

King James wording
And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,

Recognition turns their feet back toward wholeness and shared life in the same hour.

The movement is immediate: they rise and turn back toward shared life, in the same hour. At Jerusalem, whose name carries shalom, wholeness, they find the gathered company.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that recognition must end in private isolation falls away: here it moves them back among others.

ὑπέστρεψαν

hypestrepsan

GROWS FROM

στρέφω

strephō

Turn, twist, or change direction; in this compound, turn back.

“turned back” in this verse is hypestrepsan. The Greek word carries the mechanics of turning again: this is not only reaching a destination, but reversing course. Its sibling forms can name turning toward or away, so direction belongs to the same word family as return.

ALSO GROWS

epistrephō: Turn toward, turn back.

ἐπιστρέφω

Its shared turning root makes the pair’s return a change of direction, not just arrival.

apostrephō: Turn away, turn back from.

ἀποστρέφω

This branch shows how the same turning root can hold a different direction.

יְרוּשָׁלַיִם

Yerushalayim

GROWS FROM

שלם

sh-l-m

Be whole, complete, or intact; the root carried in shalom, wholeness.

The name places shalom, wholeness, inside the destination, and its dual ending evokes twofold wholeness. Their return to Jerusalem and to the gathered ones lets place and reunion echo the same movement toward wholeness.

ALSO GROWS

shalom: Wholeness, completeness, well-being.

שָׁלוֹם

It names the quality carried in the place toward which they return.

shalem: Whole, complete.

שָׁלֵם

This branch makes the root’s sense of intactness visible in the name’s inner sound.

ἀναστάντες

anastantes

GROWS FROM

ἵστημι

histēmi

Stand, set, or cause to stand.

“stood up” in this verse is anastantes. The scene begins with their bodies getting to their feet. The same root grows into the scriptural language of rising again, linking an ordinary act of standing with a wider language of resurrection.

ALSO GROWS

anastasis: Rising, resurrection.

ἀνάστασις

It carries the same standing root into the language of rising again.

stasis: Standing, position, state.

στάσις

It preserves the root’s basic sense of standing in another Greek word.

When an encounter breaks isolation, its fruit becomes shared presence and common life.

John 20:18 · SDVMary moves from seeing and hearing to telling the disciples, letting encounter rejoin a community.

Acts 2:44 · SDVThe gathered believers hold life in common, extending shared presence into material sharing.
And they bowed down to him, and turned back to Jerusalem with great joy.
Luke 24:52 · SDV

Luke uses the same Greek verb, ⁨ὑπέστρεψαν⁩ (hypestrepsan), here and in 24:33. The first return follows recognition at Emmaus; the later one follows Jesus’ departure, and both send the disciples back to Jerusalem.
