This verse in the King James

King James wording
Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,

The mind that understands Scripture is itself something Jesus opens, just as the same verb elsewhere opens eyes and heart.

Your understanding of Scripture is pictured as a capacity Jesus opens. Comprehension comes as the mind perceives what is present in the words and how they belong together.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the assumption that accumulating information alone guarantees understanding: the verse names an opened mind as what makes understanding possible.

διήνοιξεν

diēnoixen

GROWS FROM

⁨ἀνοίγω⁩ (anoigō), to open; in ⁨διανοίγω⁩ (dianoigō), to open up

To open or open up.

“threw open” in this verse is diēnoixen. The Greek says Jesus opens their ⁨νοῦς⁩ (nous, mind), so that they may ⁨συνιέναι⁩ (synienai, understand) the Scriptures. Elsewhere this same opening reaches eyes and heart: understanding is pictured as perception becoming open, not simply as more information being added.

ALSO GROWS

diēnoichthēsan: The travelers’ eyes were opened.

διηνοίχθησαν

The same verb connects the mind opened for Scripture to eyes opened for recognition.

diēnoixen: The Lord opened Lydia’s heart.

διήνοιξεν

The same opening reaches the heart, where she attends to what she hears.

Understanding arrives through an opening of perception, in the mind, eyes, or heart.

And their eyes were thrown open, and they recognized him, and he became unseen to them.
Luke 24:31 · SDVThe same verb used for the mind in Luke 24:45 describes eyes opening into recognition.
And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple from the city of Thyatira, who stood in awe of God, listened to us. The Lord opened her heart wide, and she held fast to the things Paul spoke.
Acts 16:14 · SDVThe Lord’s opening of Lydia’s heart makes her attentive to what she hears.
Uncover my eyes, that I may gaze upon the wonders from your instruction.
Psalm 119:18 · SDVThe psalm asks for opened perception to behold what is already within the instruction.
And their eyes were thrown open, and they recognized him, and he became unseen to them.
Luke 24:31 · SDV

The Greek uses the same verb, ⁨διανοίγω⁩ (dianoigō, to open up), when the travelers’ eyes are opened. Here Jesus opens the mind; there their eyes open and they recognize him, linking understanding Scripture with recognition.
