King James wording
King James Version
And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick.THE KEY
The word reaches the house before Jesus does, and the servant is already sound.
THE MEANING
Wholeness is visible in the servant’s body: he is found healthy after the messengers return. The speaker does not have to be physically beside the one receiving the healing for restoration to be real.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that healing depends on the healer standing beside the sick person: the servant is found whole after the messengers return.
THE ROOT
ὑγιαίνοντα
hygiainonta
GROWS FROM
ὑγιής
hygiēs
Sound, healthy, unimpaired.
The Greek word translated “whole” means being healthy or sound. This word family also describes “wholesome” words, joining bodily health with speech that is sound.
ALSO GROWS
hygiainō: To be in good health; to be sound.
ὑγιαίνω
This is the verb family behind the servant’s condition: he is found restored to soundness.
hygiainousin: Sound, healthy; used of words in 1 Timothy 6:3.
ὑγιαίνονσιν
The same Greek word family describes both the servant’s bodily wholeness and words that are sound.
THE PATTERN
A word can carry restoration beyond the distance between its speaker and its recipient.
He sends his word and heals them, and slips them free from their pits.Jesus said to him, Go on your way; your son lives. And the man trusted the word that Jesus had spoken to him, and he went on his way.And going away to her house, she found the demon gone out, and her child thrown upon the bed.THE THREAD
If anyone teaches otherwise, and does not draw near to healthy words, even the words of our Lord Jesus, the Anointed One, and to the teaching that is according to godliness;“Whole” in Luke and “wholesome” in 1 Timothy come from the same Greek word family, ὑγιαίνω (hygiainō), meaning to be sound or healthy. The same image names both a restored body and words that are sound.
