This verse in the King James

King James wording
For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

The centurion’s authority flows from the same order he himself stands under.

Authority appears as a relationship: you stand within an order, and those placed under you carry your words into action. The centurion recognizes that Jesus’ command can reach and act without his physical presence.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that authority must be self-made or physically present to be effective.

ἐξουσία

exousia

GROWS FROM

ἔξεστιν

exestin

It is permitted; one has the right or leave to act.

The word’s family holds authority together with permission and the right to act. The centurion’s point is that command carries weight within an order he also inhabits; it does not depend on his own force or presence.

ALSO GROWS

exestin: It is permitted; it is possible.

ἔξεστιν

This related form brings out the permission or right contained in authority.

exousiazō: To exercise authority.

ἐξουσιάζω

Here the right to act becomes authority exercised over others, as in the centurion’s commands.

τασσόμενος

tassomenos

GROWS FROM

τάσσω

tassō

To arrange, appoint, or place in order.

“placed in rank under authority” in this verse is tassomenos. The centurion describes himself as being placed in order under authority, then says he has soldiers under him. The repeated ⁨ὑπό⁩ (hypo, “under”) makes his authority a chain of placement: he gives commands from within an order he also belongs to.

ALSO GROWS

taxis: Order or arrangement.

τάξις

This noun makes visible the ordered structure implied by the centurion’s position.

diatassō: To arrange, direct, or prescribe.

διατάσσω

This related verb shows how setting things in order can extend into giving directions.

Authority becomes visible when a spoken word is carried into action.

For he says, and it comes to be; he commands, and it stands.
Psalm 33:9 · SDVThe spoken command takes effect, making authority visible in what follows.
And all were stirred, so that they asked among themselves, saying, "What is this? What new teaching is this? With authority he commands even the unclean breaths, and they hear and respond to him."
Mark 1:27 · SDVJesus’ command is recognized by the response it brings.
And all were stirred, so that they asked among themselves, saying, "What is this? What new teaching is this? With authority he commands even the unclean breaths, and they hear and respond to him."
Mark 1:27 · SDV

Mark uses the same word, ⁨ἐξουσία⁩ (exousia, “authority”), and links it to spirits obeying Jesus’ command. Luke shows the centurion’s chain of command; Mark shows authority recognized in the command’s effect.
