What Does Luke 8:18 Mean?
Watch, then, how you hear and respond, for whoever has, to them will be given, and whoever has not, even what they seem to have will be lifted away from them.
Key words are shown with the Hebrew or Greek and what each word meant.
Selah Decoded Version The Selah Decoded Version renders what the Hebrew and Greek words meant to the people who first heard them.
King James wording
King James Version
Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have.THE KEY
The verse ties what you come to have to how you hear: what is truly received grows, while mere appearance cannot hold.
THE MEANING
What you truly receive can open into more; what exists only as the appearance of having is not secure. The warning speaks now: even what you seem to possess can be taken from you.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that exposure to truth is the same as possessing it: hearing something, or seeming to have it, does not mean it has been received deeply enough to remain.
THE ROOT
ἀκούετε
akouete
GROWS FROM
ἀκου-
akou-
To hear or listen to; to receive what is heard.
“hear and respond” in this verse is akouete. The Greek word family reaches beyond sound: ἀκοή (akoē) can mean hearing or a report, while ὑπακούω (hypakouō) means to heed or obey. That makes the question how you hear a question about the kind of reception that can be held and grow.
ALSO GROWS
akoē: Hearing; a report or message.
ἀκοή
It shows hearing can name the received message as well as the act of listening.
hypakouō: To heed or obey; literally, to hear under.
ὑπακούω
This compound carries hearing into response, revealing that the verse’s concern is the quality of reception, not sound alone.
THE PATTERN
What is genuinely received opens into more, while what is held only in appearance proves unable to remain.
Bend your ear and come to me. Hear and respond, and your living soul shall live. I will cut a covenant of the ages with you, the steady faithful loves of David. My sheep hear and respond to my voice, and I perceive them, and they follow me.So then trust comes out of hearing, and hearing comes through the word of God.THE THREAD
But those on the good soil are the ones who, in a noble and good heart, having heard the word, hold it fast, and bring forth fruit by remaining beneath the weight. The same Greek verb for hearing appears here as heard, describing those who hear, keep the word, and bring forth fruit. That makes the contrast in verse 18 concrete: what is received and held can yield more; seeming possession alone cannot.
