King James wording
King James Version
And all the city was gathered together at the door.THE KEY
The doorway turns one household’s encounter with healing into a gathering point for the whole city.
THE MEANING
You stand at a threshold where what happens in one home becomes visible to a whole community. Many lives gather around the same doorway, drawn toward a shared encounter.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that healing in one household concerns only that household gives way as the whole city gathers at its door.
THE ROOT
ἐπισυνηγμένη
episynēgmenē
GROWS FROM
συνάγω
synagō
To bring or lead together; to gather.
“gathered together” in this verse is episynēgmenē. The Greek carries the action of bringing people together, beyond the English picture of a crowd simply being present. The whole city converges at one doorway, making the threshold a shared point of encounter.
ALSO GROWS
synagōgē: Gathering, assembly
συναγωγή
The same root names an assembly: the gathered people themselves, not only the act of gathering.
episynagōgē: Gathering together
ἐπισυναγωγή
This related form appears in 2 Thessalonians 2:1, where people are gathered together; it echoes the movement from scattered lives toward one gathering.
THE PATTERN
Lives dispersed by distance or need converge around a shared point of encounter.
He gathers them in from the lands, from the east and the west, from the north and the south.Straightway many gathered, so that there was no room left to hold them, not even by the door, and he spoke the word to them. And a crowd also gathered from the cities all around to Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those pressed upon by unclean breaths, and every one of them was healed.THE THREAD
And not for that nation only, but that he would also gather together into one the children of God who were scattered abroad.“Gather together” here translates a form of συνάγω (synagō), “to bring together,” the same root beneath Mark’s word. Mark shows a city converging at one door; John uses the same gathering language for scattered people brought into one.
