King James wording
King James Version
And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus went before them: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things should happen unto him,THE KEY
The way toward wholeness can hold amazement and fear at once, because Jesus is already ahead of those who follow.
THE MEANING
You can be on the way while amazement and fear are both present; the verse places them within following, not outside it. Jesus is already out in front, and the ascent toward Jerusalem carries the name of wholeness as the path continues.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Fear does not mean you have fallen off the path; here, those who are afraid are still following.
THE ROOT
ὁδός
hodós
GROWS FROM
ὁδός
hodós
A road, path, or way of going.
English can make “the way” sound like scenery, but ὁδός names the shared path of movement: Jesus leads in front, and the others proceed behind him. Related words for a way out and a way in preserve the sense of movement through a threshold.
ALSO GROWS
exodos: A way out; a departure.
ἔξοδος
This branch makes the path’s movement explicit: a way can carry someone out from where they are.
eisodos: An entrance; a way in.
εἴσοδος
The same root can name entry, showing that a way is movement through a threshold, not merely a surface underfoot.
προάγων
proagōn
GROWS FROM
ἄγω (agō), with πρό (pro-, before)
Ἄγω means to lead or bring; with πρό, it means to lead forward or go before.
“went before” in this verse is proagōn. The verb pictures more than Jesus being ahead in a line: he is leading the group forward. Its direction depends on where the path carries them, but here he goes in front while they follow.
ALSO GROWS
apagō: Lead away; take away.
ἀπάγω
This branch shows the same leading movement directed away from a place.
eisagō: Bring in; lead in.
εἰσάγω
This branch turns the movement toward entry, echoing the group’s ascent toward Jerusalem.
יְרוּשָׁלַיִם
Yerushalayim
GROWS FROM
שׁ־ל־ם
sh-l-m
To be whole or complete; wholeness.
“Jerusalem” in this verse is Yerushalayim. Yerushalayim carries shalom, wholeness, with the dual ending -ayim. The people are ascending toward a place whose name holds the image of wholeness even as amazement and fear remain with them.
ALSO GROWS
shalem: Whole; complete.
שָׁלֵם
This branch gives the root’s sense of completeness, the wholeness carried in the place-name.
shalom: Wholeness; well-being.
שָׁלוֹם
This familiar branch brings the name’s wholeness into view as the destination of the ascent.
THE PATTERN
A guide’s presence holds the path as people move through what frightens them.
And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud, to lead them on the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to shine for them; to go by day and night. When he drives out his own sheep, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they perceive his voice.Even though I walk through the valley of deepest darkness, I do not fear harm, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.THE THREAD
Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.The “way” in Mark is ὁδός (hodós), the same Greek word Jesus uses when he says, “I am the way.” What the followers travel becomes the name Jesus gives to himself: the one in front is also the way itself.
