King James wording
King James Version
For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.THE KEY
The warning is that a name can be claimed as identity while the claim carries many away from the nature it invokes.
THE MEANING
A claimant speaks under the name of the Anointed One, and many are led away by the claim. The verse speaks now wherever a name is treated as proof: the name being spoken and the nature being carried are not automatically the same.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie this undoes is that confidently claiming a sacred title proves the claimant embodies what that title names.
THE ROOT
πλανήσουσιν
planēsousin
GROWS FROM
πλανάω
planaō
To wander or lead astray.
“lead many off the path” in this verse is planēsousin. The verb translated “deceive” belongs to a word family that names wandering and the wanderer, the source of English “planet.” It pictures deception as movement off course: many can hear an identity claim and still be led away.
ALSO GROWS
planē: Wandering, error.
πλάνη
It shows how deception can become a path of thought or action that strays from its course.
planētēs: Wanderer; the source of English “planet.”
πλανήτης
The same word family links being led astray with wandering from a fixed course.
ὀνόματί
onomati
GROWS FROM
ὄνομα
onoma
Name; the identity or nature represented by a name.
The phrase “in my name” uses onoma, the word for name, and places the claimant inside the identity the name carries. The verse opens a gap between speaking a name and embodying its nature.
ALSO GROWS
onomazō: To name or call by name.
ὀνομάζω
It keeps the act of naming connected to the identity being claimed.
onomastos: Named, renowned.
ὀνομαστός
It shows how a name can carry recognition, while the verse asks whether the claimant carries the nature behind it.
THE PATTERN
Religious authority is exposed by the source and direction of a claim, even when the claim is persuasive or widely followed.
And the sign or the wonder comes to pass, of which he spoke to you, saying, Let us walk after other gods, which you have not known, and let us serve them; Thus says the LORD of hosts, Do not hear and respond to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you; they make you vapor. They speak a sight of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the LORD.Beloved, do not lean your weight on every breath, but test the breaths, whether they come out of God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.THE THREAD
I have come in my Father's nature, and you do not receive me. If another comes in his own nature, him you will receive.John uses the same Greek word, onoma, for “name,” and sets coming in the Father’s name beside coming in one’s own. That shared root sharpens Mark’s warning: the name claimed does not by itself reveal the nature being carried.
