This verse in the King James

King James wording
And Pilate answered and said again unto them, What will ye then that I shall do unto him whom ye call the King of the Jews?

Pilate’s question exposes the gap between calling someone king and letting that name govern what happens to him.

The title “King of the Jews” sits inside a decision about what is done to its bearer. A name of rule is spoken while Pilate asks what action should be taken against the one who bears it. The tension is present wherever a title is spoken but its authority is treated as disposable.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Calling someone king does not itself yield authority to that king; a title can be spoken while the person is handed over to others’ decisions.

βασιλέα

basilea

GROWS FROM

βασιλ-

Greek stem

King, ruler; the one who reigns.

The Greek word-family holds “king” alongside “to reign” and “kingdom”: the title carries governance within it. Pilate places that claim of rule beside the question of what shall be done to its bearer.

ALSO GROWS

basileuō: To reign, be king.

βασιλεύω

The title points toward the act of ruling, sharpening the tension between naming him king and deciding his fate.

basileia: Kingdom, royal rule, governance.

βασιλεία

The same word-family reaches from the king himself to the rule associated with him; Pilate’s question makes that rule’s force part of the moment.

Kingship is revealed by whether a spoken title governs the actions taken toward its bearer.

And the LORD said to Samuel, Hear and respond to the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not spurned you, but they have spurned me, that I should not reign over them.
1 Samuel 8:7 · SDVThe people’s words reveal their refusal of the LORD’s rule over them.
But they cried out, Lift him away, lift him away, crucify him! Pilate said to them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.
John 19:15 · SDVThe crowd answers Pilate’s question about their king by rejecting his rule and naming Caesar instead.
And the seventh messenger blows the trumpet, and great voices sound in heaven, saying, The governance of the world becomes the governance of our Lord and of his Anointed One, and he reigns into the ages of the ages.
Revelation 11:15 · SDVThe announcement joins the kingdoms to their ruler and makes his reign explicit.
And Pilate asked him, Are you the King of the Jews? And he answered him, You say it.
Mark 15:2 · SDV

Pilate uses the same Greek word for king, ⁨βασιλεύς⁩ (basileus), when he asks Jesus whether he is King of the Jews. In verse 12, the question moves from identity to consequence: what will be done to the one whose kingship has just been named?
