This verse in the King James

King James wording
And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not.

A witness can bring the news of life to your ears without carrying your trust with it.

You can hear a witness to life without yet placing your weight on the report. This verse holds hearing and trust apart: receiving testimony does not make trust automatic.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the assumption that hearing a firsthand witness necessarily makes trust follow.

ἐπίστευσαν

episteusan

GROWS FROM

πιστ-

pist-

Trust, confidence; placing reliance or weight.

“would not trust it” in this verse is episteusan. The verb belongs to the same word family as trust and steadiness. Their response is more than a gap in information: they do not place their trust in the testimony they hear.

ALSO GROWS

pistis: trust, confidence

πίστις

This noun names the reliance the verb here withholds.

pistos: trustworthy, firm, steady

πιστός

The word family links placing trust with being reliable, showing that the verse concerns a relationship to the witness, not merely an idea to consider.

ζῇ

zē

GROWS FROM

ζάω

zaō

To live, to be alive.

Under “was alive” is the present form ⁨ζῇ⁩, “he lives.” The report speaks of life as present, while the hearers’ response remains apart from it.

ALSO GROWS

zōē: life

ζωή

The report that he lives belongs to the same word family as the noun for life.

zōon: a living being, creature

ζῷον

This branch keeps the family concrete: it speaks of living beings, not life only as an abstract idea.

A true report that someone is alive can reach the ear before it becomes trust.

And they told him, saying, Joseph is yet alive, and he is ruler over all the land of Egypt. And Jacob's heart went slack, for he did not lean his weight on them.
Genesis 45:26 · SDVJacob hears that Joseph is alive, yet the report does not immediately become believable to him.
And their words appeared before them like babble, and they did not trust them.
Luke 24:11 · SDVThe women’s testimony reaches the hearers, but they do not yet trust it.
The other disciples therefore said to him, We have perceived the Lord. But he said to them, Unless I perceive in his hands the mark of the nails, and put my finger into the mark of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not lean my full weight.
John 20:25 · SDVEven a firsthand report of seeing the living Lord does not automatically produce trust.
So then trust comes out of hearing, and hearing comes through the word of God.
Romans 10:17 · SDV

The Greek word translated “faith” belongs to the same word family as “believed” in Mark, carrying the sense of trust. Romans names hearing as a way trust comes; Mark shows that hearing does not make trust automatic.
