King James wording
King James Version
And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn.THE KEY
The Greek calls these fields “sown places”: the disciples are inside the movement from seed to provision when they reach for the grain.
THE MEANING
Your ordinary bodily needs remain present even within a day set apart. This scene holds sacred time and the simple act of gathering food together without explaining either away.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that setting time apart requires pretending the body has no needs.
THE ROOT
σπορίμων
sporímōn
GROWS FROM
σπειρ-
σπειρ- (speir-) carries the sense of sowing or scattering seed.
“grain fields” in this verse is sporímōn. The Greek word describes sown ground, bringing the seed into the field itself. The disciples move among what was sown and has grown into food ready to gather.
ALSO GROWS
speírō: to sow or scatter seed
σπείρω
This verb is the action behind the sown fields the disciples walk through.
sporá: sowing or seed-time
σπορά
It names the act and season that precede the field’s growth.
spóros: seed, or what has been sown
σπόρος
It makes the field’s present grain part of a larger seed-to-harvest movement.
THE PATTERN
Sacred order leaves room for living people to receive what they need.
When you come into your neighbor's standing grain, then you may pluck the ears with your hand, but you shall not wave a sickle to your neighbor's standing grain. And when you cut the harvest of your land, you shall not finish cutting to the edge of your field, nor gather up what falls from your harvest. He said to them, The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.THE THREAD
Do not be led astray. God is not sneered at. For whatever a person sows, that also he reaps. The field word in Mark and “soweth” in Galatians belong to the Greek seed-and-sowing family, σπειρ- (speir-). Galatians makes the seed-to-yield movement explicit, while Mark shows the disciples walking among what has been sown and grown.
