This verse in the King James

King James wording
And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.

The kingdom collapses from within when the parts of its own ruling order turn against one another.

Whenever a governing order turns its own parts against one another, it loses the coherence that lets it stand. The verse locates collapse inside the divided whole itself; the fracture is already at work before any outside force arrives.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that internal division can leave a whole unchanged: the fracture itself weakens the thing it divides.

μερισθῇ

meristhē

GROWS FROM

μερίζω

merizō

To divide, apportion, or distribute into parts.

English “divided” can sound like disagreement alone, but ⁨μερίζω⁩ (merizō, “divide or apportion”) means separating or assigning portions. The kingdom is split within itself, and the verse says that this partition removes the coherence required for it to stand.

ALSO GROWS

meros: Part, share.

μέρος

A meros is a portion of a whole; the word family makes the divided kingdom’s internal parts visible.

merismos: Division, distribution.

μερισμός

This names division or distribution itself, highlighting the act that breaks the whole into portions.

βασιλεία

basileia

GROWS FROM

βασιλευ-

basileu-

Kingship, rule, or reign.

“governance” in this verse is basileia. ⁨βασιλεία⁩ (basileia) can name kingship or rule as well as a kingdom. The division therefore reaches the governing order itself: the authority meant to organize the whole is split within.

ALSO GROWS

basileus: King, ruler.

βασιλεύς

The ruler’s authority gives the kingdom its ordering center; division within the kingdom reaches that order.

basileuō: To reign, rule.

βασιλεύω

This verb shows the active exercise of rule contained in the idea of a kingdom.

A whole loses its stability when its own parts are turned against one another.

And if a house be split against itself, that house cannot stand.
Mark 3:25 · SDVThe same test reaches from a kingdom to a household: division within the whole prevents it from standing.
Now I urge you, brothers, by the nature of our Lord Jesus, the Anointed One, that you all say the same thing, and that there be no rending among you, but that you be mended together in the same mind and the same judgment.
1 Corinthians 1:10 · SDVThis names divisions inside a community as the opposite of being joined together.
A Song of degrees of David. Look, how good and how sweet it is for brothers to settle also together!
Psalm 133:1 · SDVShared life appears as the positive form of the coherence that internal division breaks.
But Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them, Every governance divided against itself is laid empty, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.
Matthew 12:25 · SDV

Matthew uses the same verb ⁨μερίζω⁩ (merizō, “divide or apportion”), making this a direct root echo. It extends the same inner fracture from a kingdom to a city or house, showing the instability within the divided whole itself.
