King James wording
King James Version
And the Pharisees went forth, and straightway took counsel with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him.THE KEY
The verb for “destroy” also means “make perish”, the counsel is already a plan to make a living person become lost.
THE MEANING
A healed hand is met with counsel to make its healer perish: separate groups align and move from opposition into a plan of destruction. The verse speaks wherever those threatened by restoration turn their fear into coordinated violence.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that groups with different loyalties cannot unite in harm: shared hostility can make rivals collaborators.
THE ROOT
ἀπολέσωσιν
apolesōsin
GROWS FROM
ὄλλυμι (ollumi), in ἀπόλλυμι
To destroy, bring to ruin, or perish.
The Greek verb ἀπόλλυμι (apollymi) ranges across destroying, perishing, and losing; here it means they are planning to make him perish. The same word family can describe what is lost, so this plan aims to turn a living person into one who is gone.
ALSO GROWS
apōleia: Destruction, ruin, or loss.
ἀπώλεια
This noun from the same word family names the ruin toward which their counsel is directed.
apolōlos: Lost, perished.
ἀπολωλός
This form of the same verb describes one who is lost or has perished, joining the planned destruction here to the language of loss.
THE PATTERN
When a person’s presence unsettles power, separate forces can converge in a plan to destroy him.
And when they saw him from afar, before he came near to them, they laid a snare against him to slay him.The kings of the earth take their stand, and the rulers sit down together against the LORD and against his anointed one, saying,For in truth, in this city, against your set-apart servant Jesus, whom you anointed, Herod and Pontius Pilate were gathered together with the nations and the peoples of Israel,THE THREAD
And he said to them, Is it permitted on the sabbath to do good, or to do evil? To deliver a living soul, or to kill? But they held their tongues. The preceding question names the choice their silence conceals: save a life or kill. This verse shows that silence becoming a plan of destruction. What they will not answer aloud, they enact in counsel.
