King James wording
King James Version
But when it is sown, it groweth up, and becometh greater than all herbs, and shooteth out great branches; so that the fowls of the air may lodge under the shadow of it.THE KEY
The plant’s greatness is revealed by what can make a home in its shade.
THE MEANING
A small beginning grows beyond its own survival: it becomes roomy enough for other life to settle in its shade. Its flourishing appears not only in how high it rises, but in the shelter it makes available to others.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that a small beginning can produce only a small effect: the seed grows into a plant whose shade gives other lives room to settle.
THE ROOT
κατασκηνοῦν
kataskēnoun
GROWS FROM
σκην-
skēn-
tent; dwelling
“nest” in this verse is kataskēnoun. The Greek verb translated “lodge” belongs to the same word family as “tent” and “dwelling.” The seed’s growth ends in more than size: it becomes a living shelter where other creatures can settle.
ALSO GROWS
skēnē: tent; dwelling place
σκηνή
This noun makes the shelter within “lodge” visible: the birds find a place to dwell beneath the plant.
skēnoō: pitch a tent; dwell
σκηνόω
This related verb shows the shared image beneath the English words for lodging and dwelling.
THE PATTERN
Growth reaches its fullness when what rises from a small beginning becomes shelter for other life.
Above them the birds of heaven settle; among the branches they give voice. In the mountain of the height of Israel will I plant it. It shall bring forth boughs, and bear fruit, and become a goodly cedar. And under it shall settle every bird of every wing; in the shadow of its branches they shall settle. It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and threw into his garden, and it grew into a great tree, and the birds of the heavens pitched their tents in its branches.THE THREAD
And the word became flesh and pitched a tent among us, and we beheld his weight, the weight as of the only-born from the Father, full of favor and truth. The Greek word translated “dwelt” is ἐσκήνωσεν (eskēnōsen), meaning “pitched a tent” or “made a dwelling,” from the same σκην- family as Mark’s “lodge.” Mark’s birds settle beneath a grown plant as under a tent; John uses that same dwelling-root for the Word among us, linking shelter with presence.
