Selah Decoded Version The Selah Decoded Version renders what the Hebrew and Greek words meant to the people who first heard them.

This verse in the King James

King James wording
And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up.

The seed arrives, but it remains beside the path, exposed before it can enter the earth.

The word reaches you and can still remain at the surface, beside the way rather than within receptive ground. What stays exposed is quickly carried off before it takes root.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the assumption that hearing or being near a word is the same as receiving it; what remains on the surface can still be taken away.

σπείρειν

speirein

GROWS FROM

σπειρ-

speir-

To sow or scatter seed.

“sowed” in this verse is speirein. This word family names both seed and scattering: sowing sends seed outward across the ground. The verse shows what that exposure means when some seed lands beside the path, where it can be taken before growth begins.

ALSO GROWS

sporos: Seed, or what is sown.

σπόρος

The seed is the substance carried outward by the act of sowing.

diaspora: Scattering or dispersal.

διασπορά

This related word preserves the outward scattering in the image of sowing.

The word’s fruit depends on where it lands: what remains exposed is vulnerable, while what enters receptive ground can grow and endure.

For thus says the LORD to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, "Break open your fallow ground, and do not sow among thorns."
Jeremiah 4:3 · SDVThe ground must be opened for sowing to take hold; seed scattered among thorns remains vulnerable.
I store your word in my heart, so that I do not miss the mark against you.
Psalm 119:11 · SDVThe word is held within the heart, no longer exposed at the surface.
So shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth. It shall not return to me empty, but shall do what I delight in, and shall break through in the thing to which I sent it.
Isaiah 55:11 · SDVThe word sent forth reaches its purpose, expressing the fruitfulness that follows when it takes hold.
These are the ones beside the road, where the word is sown, and when they hear, straightway the Adversary comes and lifts away the word that was sown in them.
Mark 4:15 · SDV

The same phrase, “by the way side,” returns, and the seed is named as the word. The next verse reveals the taking behind the birds: the loss begins while the word remains exposed, before it takes root in the heart.
