This verse in the King James

King James wording
In those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and saith unto them,

Before the crowd has food, Jesus draws his disciples close to its hunger.

A lack can be real while its answer remains unseen. The crowd has nothing to eat, and Jesus draws the disciples close and speaks into that unresolved moment. The need is visible, and attention gathers around it.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

An unresolved need is not necessarily an ignored need: the disciples are drawn near while the crowd still has nothing to eat.

προσκαλεσάμενος

proskalesamenos

GROWS FROM

⁨καλέω⁩ (kaleō), with ⁨πρός⁩ (pros, toward)

To call or summon; with ⁨πρός⁩, to call toward oneself.

“called unto him” in this verse is proskalesamenos. The English phrase already says “unto him,” while the Greek gathers that direction into the act itself: ⁨προσκαλέομαι⁩ (proskaleomai) is to call toward oneself. Jesus’ call draws the disciples into the same space as the crowd’s hunger, before the response is clear.

ALSO GROWS

klēsis: Calling, invitation

κλῆσις

The same word family names the call itself, not only the act of summoning.

klētos: Called, invited

κλητός

The same root describes the person who receives a call.

The need of many is drawn into shared attention before provision is distributed.

And the children of Israel said to them, Would that we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots and ate bread until we were filled. For you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.
Exodus 16:3 · SDVThe assembly voices its hunger before the manna arrives.
And his attendant said, How shall I place this before a hundred men? He said again, Give to the people, that they may eat. For thus says the LORD, They shall eat, and some shall remain.
2 Kings 4:43 · SDVA servant voices the seeming insufficiency of the food just before it is given to the people.
When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great crowd coming to him, he said to Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?
John 6:5 · SDVJesus makes the crowd’s need a question shared with Philip before bread is distributed.
And he went up into the mountain, and called to himself whom he would, and they came to him.
Mark 3:13 · SDV

Mark uses the same verb, ⁨προσκαλέω⁩ (proskaleō, call toward oneself), when Jesus calls those he chooses to him. Here the same call gathers the disciples close to a crowd’s hunger, so being drawn to Jesus also means being drawn into the need he is addressing.
