This verse in the King James

King James wording
And suddenly, when they had looked round about, they saw no man any more, save Jesus only with themselves.

Jesus is alone in their sight, yet the verse places him with them.

When the surrounding scene recedes, your perception gathers around Jesus, who remains with you. The verse holds singular focus and companionship together: he is the only one in view, and he is not distant.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The disappearance of every other figure does not mean you have been abandoned; Jesus remains with those who see him.

εἶδον

eídon

GROWS FROM

ὁράω

horaō

⁨ὁράω⁩ (horaō) means to see or perceive; ⁨εἶδον⁩ (eídon, “they saw”) is its irregular aorist form.

“saw” in this verse is eídon. The Greek verb carries perception, not just the registration of an image. As the other figures disappear from view, the seeing settles on Jesus, who is present beside them.

ALSO GROWS

horasis: vision, sight

ὅρασις

This branch makes visible the link between seeing and what comes into view: here, Jesus alone remains in their sight.

horatos: visible, perceptible

ὁρατός

The verse turns on what is perceptible once the scene clears, joining Jesus’ visibility with his nearness to those seeing him.

Recognition gathers around divine presence as the surrounding scene falls away.

And Jacob woke out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not perceive it.
Genesis 28:16 · SDVAs the dream recedes, Jacob recognizes the LORD’s presence in the place where he stands.
And their eyes were thrown open, and they recognized him, and he became unseen to them.
Luke 24:31 · SDVTheir perception opens into recognition of Jesus, even as the visible scene changes.
Fixing our sight on Jesus, the one who goes first and brings our trust to its goal, who for the joy lying before him remained under the cross, looking down on the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 12:2 · SDVThe gaze gathers around Jesus as the one who brings trust to its completion.
Then the other disciple, who had come first to the tomb, also went in, and he perceived, and trusted.
John 20:8 · SDV

The Greek verb translated “saw” here is from the same verb family as “saw” in Mark 9:8. John places seeing beside believing; Mark shows perception gathering on Jesus, the one who remains with them.
