This verse in the King James

King James wording
Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;

The word “apostles” already names these people as sent ones: before the list tells what they do, it gives them an identity shaped by movement outward.

A shared calling holds distinct people rather than erasing them: Simon is named as Peter, Andrew as a brother, and James and John through their family ties. This remains true for you now: belonging to a common purpose does not make a person’s name and relationships interchangeable.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the idea that a shared calling makes people interchangeable: the verse gives each person a name and places them in specific relationships.

ἀποστόλων

apostolōn

GROWS FROM

στελλ-

The Greek stem ⁨στελλ-⁩ (stell-) means send or dispatch; in ⁨στέλλω⁩ (stellō), it can also mean equip or prepare.

“sent ones” in this verse is apostolōn. An apostle is a sent one: the word carries direction outward before the sending in the next verses is spoken. The related forms hold sending and sent identity together, so this roster already describes movement, not merely a set of names.

ALSO GROWS

apostellō: To send away, dispatch

ἀποστέλλω

Its stem carries the same ⁨σ-τ-λ⁩ consonants, showing the action behind the apostles’ name.

apostolē: A sending, commission

ἀποστολή

Its apostol- form shares the sending stem, linking the identity of an apostle to the act of being sent.

Πέτρος

Petros

GROWS FROM

πετρ-

Stone or rock; the name carries this material image.

Peter is not only a personal sound: the Greek name keeps the stone image audible. Simon is named both as Simon and as Peter, so this verse lets a person and the image carried by his name stand together.

ALSO GROWS

petra: Rock

πέτρα

The shared ⁨πετρ-⁩ stem makes the rock image in Peter’s name visible.

petrinos: Made of stone, stony

πέτρινος

This form carries the same stem into an adjective describing something as stone-like.

A calling can name people individually while gathering them into one work or movement.

But now, thus says the LORD, who created you, O Jacob, and who shaped you, O Israel. Do not fear, for I have bought you back; I have called you by your name; you are mine.
Isaiah 43:1 · SDVThe call reaches a person by name and holds that particular identity within belonging.
To him the gatekeeper opens, and the sheep hear and respond to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name, and leads them out.
John 10:3 · SDVThe sheep are called individually by name and then led into movement.
As they served the Lord and fasted, the Set-Apart Breath said, Mark off for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.
Acts 13:2 · SDVBarnabas and Saul are named as distinct people and gathered into a shared work.
These twelve Jesus sent out, and commanded them, saying, Do not go into the road of the nations, and do not enter any city of the Samaritans.
Matthew 10:5 · SDV

The Greek sending family that names them apostles becomes the action Jesus performs next: he sends these twelve forth. The list already points toward that movement; their identity as sent ones is about to become an event.
