King James wording
King James Version
And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:THE KEY
The Greek word for “divided” carries the sense of portioning into shares: a whole loses its footing when its parts become adversaries.
THE MEANING
When the parts of a family, community, or inner life turn against the whole they share, that whole cannot remain established. The verse names the damage as something that grows from within, where each part opposes the very structure that gives it a place.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A group can remain whole while its members work against one another.
THE ROOT
μερισθεῖσα
meristheisa
GROWS FROM
μερ-
mer-
A part or share; to divide or apportion into parts.
“divided” in this verse is meristheisa. The word carries the sense of portioning a whole into shares, so the warning is more specific than the presence of differences: the parts are set against one another. Each share turns against the kingdom, city, or house whose wholeness gives it a place.
ALSO GROWS
meris: A part or share.
μέρις
A divided whole is made up of portions that no longer hold together.
merismos: A division or distribution.
μερισμός
The same word family can describe the act of separating something into parts, making the verse’s image of internal fracture concrete.
σταθήσεται
stathēsetai
GROWS FROM
στη-/στα- (stē-/sta-)
To stand, set upright, or establish.
“stand” in this verse is stathēsetai. The verse does not describe a house merely losing comfort; it says the divided structure cannot remain established. The contrast is between parts turned against each other and a whole able to hold its place.
ALSO GROWS
stasis: A standing, position, or state.
στάσις
It makes visible the condition that the divided city or house cannot keep.
anastasis: A rising or standing up.
ἀνάστασις
It carries the same standing image into the possibility of rising again.
THE PATTERN
A shared whole loses its footing when the relationships among its parts become adversarial.
The one who troubles his own house inherits breath, and the fool is a servant to the wise of heart. And if a governance be split against itself, that governance cannot stand. Now I urge you, brothers, by the nature of our Lord Jesus, the Anointed One, that you all say the same thing, and that there be no rending among you, but that you be mended together in the same mind and the same judgment.THE THREAD
Has the Anointed One been torn into parts? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you immersed into the nature of Paul?“Divided” here uses the same Greek word family as the portioning in Matthew 12:25. The question makes the fracture visible: a shared whole cannot be treated as separate competing shares without undoing what holds it together.
