This verse in the King James

King James wording
For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

The verse moves from Jonah’s belly to the earth’s heart: the Son of Man’s descent reaches the deepest center, but only for a measured time.

The Son of Man enters the earth’s deepest place for three days and three nights. The depth is real, yet the verse gives it a limit; what seems to be the final hold is not the final word.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that descent into death means permanent abandonment is undone here: even the earth’s heart holds the Son of Man for a bounded span.

καρδία

kardia

GROWS FROM

καρδ-

kard-

The heart as the inner center, the seat of thought, desire, and will.

Matthew uses ⁨κοιλία⁩ (koilia, “belly”) for the sea creature and ⁨καρδία⁩ (kardia, “heart”) for the earth. That shift makes the earth an image of an innermost center: the descent reaches the core, while the three-day measure keeps that depth from becoming the ending.

ALSO GROWS

kardiognōstēs: Knower of hearts (Acts 1:24).

καρδιογνώστης

The heart is an inward place that can be known, not merely a physical organ; this branch deepens the image of the Son of Man entering what lies hidden.

sklērokardia: Hardness of heart (Matthew 19:8).

σκληροκαρδία

The same heart-word can name a hardened inner center; here, by contrast, the earth’s heart names the depth into which the Son of Man descends.

A descent into the hidden place of death is bounded and opens toward emergence.

And the LORD appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
Jonah 1:17 · SDVJonah’s confinement supplies the measured descent that Matthew echoes.
And the LORD said to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out onto the dry ground.
Jonah 2:10 · SDVThe one held inside the fish is brought back out onto dry land.
And that he was buried, and that he has been awakened on the third day according to the writings.
1 Corinthians 15:4 · SDVThe descent into burial gives way to rising on the third day.
And the LORD appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
Jonah 1:17 · SDV

Jonah is held in the fish for the same three days and three nights Matthew names. Matthew shifts the inner place from the fish’s belly to the earth’s heart, making Jonah’s descent the pattern for what the Son of Man enters.
